An Overview of DUKE
ANESTHESIOLOGYEDUCATION

The Department of Anesthesiology aims to provide the highest quality education
to medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty members in the
science and art of anesthesiology, critical care medicine, pain management,
and related disciplines. Our success is measured by the accomplishments of our medical
students, residents, and fellows, their board certification and subspecialty certification,
their clinical performance, their academic accomplishments, and their professional
fulfillment as physicians and life-long learners. The department is focused on
achieving the highest level of scholarship at the faculty level. In turn, it works to instill
in departmental members and trainees alike a commitment to clinical excellence and
a passion for intellectual pursuits in anesthesiology and the medical sciences.
The resources devoted to these endeavors include state-of-the-art facilities, a large
and diverse clinical caseload, and an outstanding faculty. Clinical care and training are
conducted in multiple locations, all of which are centered around and within short
walking distance of the 30-room main operating room suite at Duke North Hospital.
Additional Duke operating rooms for specialty training include the five-room Duke Eye
Center and the eight-room Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). Of note, the Duke ASC
is internationally renowned for its unique approach to the care of the ambulatory surgery
patient, focusing on innovative regional anesthesia techniques that are applied in
most of the cases. Additional clinical sites include the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical
Center, located adjacent to Duke North Hospital, with nine new operating rooms
opened in 2002 and the Duke Pain Management Center. These extensive facilities are
all closely located and offer extraordinary breadth and depth of clinical case material
for training.
The department also offers unique interactive educational opportunities through the Duke Human
Simulation and Patient Safety Center. This extraordinary facility is employed from the first day of a resident’s
training in anesthesiology and provides unique opportunities for education in crisis management,
patient safety, and other computer-driven learning throughout the residency years.
Although the extensive modern facilities and large, diverse caseload provide two vital ingredients
