His career has focused on investigating<br />

methods to measure and improve outcome<br />

after cardiac surgery in children and adults.<br />

Bill’s current research focuses on brain oxygenation<br />

and metabolism in cardiopulmonary<br />

bypass and newborn brain oxygenation and<br />

cellular injury in repeated apnea. He has established<br />

the Center for Outcomes Research at The<br />

Children’s Hospital <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia and the<br />

Children’s Clinical Research Institute (CCRI). He<br />

has authored over seventy articles, forty chapters,<br />

and three textbooks.<br />

We were treated to three presentations by<br />

Bill—one was a resident and fellow’s lecture<br />

titled “Pediatric CV Anesthesia: The Heart <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Matter;” another was a cardiothoracic conference<br />

lecture on “Neurological Outcome and<br />

Congenital Heart Surgery;” and the final presentation<br />

was a Grand Rounds lecture titled<br />

“Anesthesia for Fetal Heart Surgery.” Bill’s lec-<br />

The department recently welcomed one <strong>of</strong> its own, William Greeley, MD, as a visiting<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Bill has had a remarkable educational career with residency/fellowship<br />

training at <strong>Duke</strong> in pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, <strong>anes</strong>thesiology, and pediatric<br />

critical care medicine. He then joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> DUMC as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>anes</strong>thesiology. After thirteen years at <strong>Duke</strong> with another degree in hand (MBA), Bill<br />

moved to Philadelphia to become the chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Anesthesiology</strong> &<br />

Critical Care Medicine at The Children’s Hospital <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania.<br />

tures were entertaining and informative, as<br />

always. And, very well attended.<br />
