His career has focused on investigating
methods to measure and improve outcome
after cardiac surgery in children and adults.
Bill’s current research focuses on brain oxygenation
and metabolism in cardiopulmonary
bypass and newborn brain oxygenation and
cellular injury in repeated apnea. He has established
the Center for Outcomes Research at The
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the
Children’s Clinical Research Institute (CCRI). He
has authored over seventy articles, forty chapters,
and three textbooks.
We were treated to three presentations by
Bill—one was a resident and fellow’s lecture
titled “Pediatric CV Anesthesia: The Heart of the
Matter;” another was a cardiothoracic conference
lecture on “Neurological Outcome and
Congenital Heart Surgery;” and the final presentation
was a Grand Rounds lecture titled
“Anesthesia for Fetal Heart Surgery.” Bill’s lec-

The department recently welcomed one of its own, William Greeley, MD, as a visiting
professor. Bill has had a remarkable educational career with residency/fellowship
training at Duke in pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, anesthesiology, and pediatric
critical care medicine. He then joined the faculty of DUMC as an assistant professor
of anesthesiology. After thirteen years at Duke with another degree in hand (MBA), Bill
moved to Philadelphia to become the chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology &
Critical Care Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania.
