Resident success with board certification
Fellowship Education
Approximately eighteen fellows are trained
each year in a variety of subspecialties.
Currently, the Department of Anesthesiology is
training eight cardiothoracic anesthesia, one
neuroanesthesia, two pain management, two
critical care, two regional anesthesia, two
obstetric and women’s anesthesia, and two
undersea and hyperbaric medicine fellows.
Fellowships usually include a mixture of clinical
care and clinical or basic science research; they
last from one to three years. Many fellows have
successfully competed for grant funding and
have gone on to launch academic careers at
many institutions around the world.
NIH Post-Doctoral Research
Training Grant
The department is fortunate to have been
awarded a highly competitive NIH training
grant for the academic development of fellows
and junior faculty. The goal of this program is to
facilitate transition of physician-scientists into
the status of being independently funded investigators
after completion of clinical training. This
year’s fellows include Dr. Ellen Flanagan who is
investigating medical ethics (see page 25), Dr.
Lisa Faberowski who is studying the effect of
volatile anesthetics on neuronal apoptosis as a
function of stages in brain development, and
Dr. John Frieberger who is researching the
mechanisms of oxidative stress and interactions
with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Continuing Medical Education
The faculty members of the department are
dedicated teachers who lecture around the
world as a part of various medical conference
meetings designed to update and refresh the
practicing anesthesiologist. In addition, many
faculty members are involved in the planning
and execution of national and international
meetings. Examples of the multitude of faculty
activities include Dr. Lineberger’s yearly participation
in a Singapore educational forum, Dr.
Joseph Mathew’s annual explication of educational
goals for perioperative TEE certification,
and Drs. Mark Stafford Smith and Taekman’s
use of the patient simulator to educate clinical
research monitors about medical drug evaluation
trials.
Of note, the department offers a variety of
educational programs for the practicing anesthesiologist,
from a two-week intensive course
in regional anesthesia at the Ambulatory
Surgery Center to the Annual Duke
Cardiothoracic Update course held each year in
Hilton Head, SC.
Annual Resident Alumni
Evening
For over ten years, the department has
sponsored an alumni evening at the Siena
Hotel. We invite three to four alumni from private
practice, academics, and military practices
to give a brief job depiction and to talk with our
residents. These alumni excite our residents
with descriptions of the bright future ahead of
them but also relate to them important facts
about seeking a first job, relocating, and understanding
contracts.
Summary
We are fortunate to work in a department
that has invested a great deal of energy and
resources in education. We look forward to
ongoing productivity and success in all of the
areas of our teaching and learning missions
and appreciate the energy put forth by the
entire department to realize these goals.
