General Troubleshooting Process<br />

As a general guideline, you can use the following general troubleshooting process described in the course.<br />

1. Define the problem (symptoms).<br />

2. Gather information.<br />

3. Analyze the information.<br />

4. Propose a hypothesis (possible cause).<br />

5. Test the hypothesis.<br />

6. Eliminate or accept the hypothesis.<br />

7. Solve the problem.<br />

8. Document the problem.<br />

Command Summary<br />

The table lists useful commands for this lab. The sample output is shown on following pages.<br />

show ip inspect sessions<br />

show ip inspect config<br />

show ip inspect interfaces<br />

show access-lists ACL#/name<br />

show vlan access-map<br />

show vlan filter<br />

show ntp associations<br />

show ntp status<br />

Displays established sessions with the source IP address and<br />

port number, protocol name, and destination IP address and<br />

port number.<br />

Displays inspection rule configuration information, including<br />

rule name, session parameters, and protocols being<br />

inspected.<br />

Displays interfaces configured for inspection and<br />

inbound/outbound inspection rules, if set, and<br />

inbound/outbound access lists, if applied. Also displays<br />

protocols being inspected.<br />

Displays all ACLs configured on a device, including the ACL<br />

number and name, the type of ACL (standard or extended),<br />

the statements in each ACL, and the number of matches<br />

accumulated for each statement.<br />

Displays the name of any configured VLAN access maps,<br />

including the match clauses in each. An implied deny all<br />

match clause is in effect at the end of the access map.<br />

Displays the name of any configured VLAN access maps and<br />

the VLANs for which they are filtering traffic.<br />

Displays the time and date kept by the device internal clock.<br />

Displays the configured NTP server IP address, reference<br />

clock in use, stratum level, and sync status.<br />

Displays the clock synchronization status, stratum level, and<br />

reference clock IP address. Also shows the number of<br />

seconds since the last update was received from the<br />

reference clock.<br />
