9. Conclusion
9.1 Development of the Thames Gateway will be an immensely
complex, demanding and difficult task. The rewards of success
will be great. The Gateway offers an extraordinary opportunity.
It can accommodate a substantial share of the housing and
employment growth that will inevitably take place in the wider
South East. The figures in this Statement show that there is the
potential for sustained development significantly above the
targets in Creating Sustainable Communities to 2016 and
continuing growth thereafter, if the right supporting
infrastructure is put in place and if strong implementation
mechanisms can increase rates of completion. This will require
public as well as private resources on a major scale to fund the
transport and community infrastructure essential for the
necessary step change to achieve high quality growth and
environmental improvement. The scale and location of the
Gateway and the potential to gain substantial value from
currently under-used assets make it a unique opportunity to
combine sustainable community planning with strong economic
development. This will require a collaborative and committed
approach. The Gateway is an opportunity that all three regional
planning authorities intend to seize.
