1.6 The Gateway will be much more than the sum of its parts:
◆ the cumulative scale of growth across the sub-region will
make investment more attractive and cost-effective. The size
and diversity of employment will increase opportunities to
work within the Gateway for all its residents.
◆ the promotion of the Gateway as an entity will mean that
every successive high quality new development and piece of
additional infrastructure will raise the profile of the sub-region
as a whole.
◆ the “new geography” of the Gateway will bring a stronger
sense of place to some disparate and rather isolated
communities.
1.7 The fulfillment of the Gateway’s full potential will take more
than a generation. This Statement uses 2016 as a convenient
time frame within which to set targets. However, the RPBs are
looking well beyond this date. They believe that the Gateway
will have development potential for many years into the future if
the infrastructure that will help to drive that growth momentum
can be put in place quickly and comprehensively.
1.8 This will require public as well as private resources on a major
scale. However the realisation of the capacity of the Gateway
will provide far more effective deployment of public and private
expenditure to accommodate the inevitable growth in the wider
South East than more dispersed and less co-ordinated forms of
