the Second World War? What influence did the Scandinavian

it was not only the famous Swedish “folk home” (folkhem) that contributed 

to the development of a “nordic model”; the state of modernisation 

in each case, different architectural preferences, and even

gert Wingårdh is not the protagonist of a genuinely Swedish architecture. the outgoing ar- 

chitect’s role on both the national and international scenes is too cosmopolitan for that; and 

the solutions he develops for a range of construction tasks are too multiform, imaginative, and 

surprising. Working without the constraints of a predefined individual style or fixed theoretical 

or coceptual orientation, with every new design he succeeds in finding a suitable architectural 

language and fitting expression for the task in hand. in the interests of users, he places 

emphasis on functional, but also on aesthetic and atmospheric qualities —while ecological 

sustainability is also absolutely essential to his buildings. today he is already regarded as the

On the occasion of the international Arco art fair in Madrid, 

2b architectes developed an exhibition pavilion for Switzerland 

in the interior courtyard of the Conde Duque cultural 

centre, providing space for exhibitions and other art-related 

events. Two containers stacked on top of one another as 

“Swiss Boxes” formed a three-dimensional white cross. The 

translucency of the white outside skin, made of polycarbonate, 

created a closed interior space that was illuminated by 

softened daylight. At night-time, when the interior space was 

lit up, the cubes looked like huge lanterns, illuminating the 

whole courtyard. 

Lengths of a red, UV-proof net material, which is generally 

used in scaffolding structures, were hung up between the 

white, crossing containers and the walls of the former barracks 

building. They formed the red area of the Swiss flag, 

which could only be recognised from a bird’s eye view. The 

covering of red bands – in reference to the toldos that are 

hung up in the streets and squares of Spain for sun protection 

– created a further space that was closed to they sky in 

the inner courtyard. 

Anlässlich der internationalen Kunstmesse Arco in 

Madrid entwickelten 2b architectes für die Schweiz 

einen Ausstellungspavillon im Innenhof des Kulturzentrums 

Conde Duque, der Platz für Ausstellungen und 

andere kunstbezogene Veranstaltungen bieten sollte. 

Zwei als „Swiss boxes“ übereinander gelagerte Container 

bildeten ein dreidimensionales weißes Kreuz. 

Aufgrund der Transluzenz der weißen Außenhaut 

aus Polycarbonat entstand ein geschlossener, durch 

gedämpftes Tageslicht erhellter Innenraum. Nachts, 

wenn das Innere beleuchtet wurde, erschienen die 

Kuben wie große Laternen und illuminierten den 

gesamten Innenhof. 

Von den weißen, übereinander gekreuzten Containern 

wurden rote Bahnen aus einem gewöhnlich im 

Gerüstbau eingesetzten UV-beständigen Netzmaterial 

waagrecht zu den Mauern des ehemaligen Kasernengebäudes 

gespannt. Sie bildeten die rote Fläche der 

Schweizer Fahne, die nur aus der Vogelperspektive 

zu erkennen war. Beschattet durch die roten Bänder 

– eine Reverenz an die vor Sonne schützenden 

Toldos, die in Spanien seit jeher über Straßen und 

Plätzen gespannt werden –, entstand im Innenhof ein 

weiterer nach oben geschlossener Raum.

Since the mid-1990s, the new campus of the goethe University has 

been under construction in close proximity to the famous ig Farben 

building by Hans poelzig. the law and economics Faculty is the big- 

gest new building on the campus to date. it embodies the outstand- 

ing architectonic aspirations of this unique building project. the 

building is one of the best, most important structures by the architects 

thomas müller and ivan reimann, and in many respects it reveals 

their working methods and architectural outlook in an exemplary 

way. With the aid of texts and plans, this publication presents 

the historical and conceptual contexts behind the campus as a whole 

and the faculty building. Stefan müller’s photographs not only illustrate 

the architecture and atmosphere of the building, they are also 

intended as a photographic essay in themselves.

Unquestionably, rave architects are regarded 

as an institution in berlin. viewing the complex 

work of brothers jan and rolf rave, it seems 

that in an exemplary way, their buildings mir- 

ror the key stages of architectural development 

from the early 1960s—and with roosje rave 

from 1990—to the present day. 

in their constant and determined efforts at contemporary building, 

the raves never regarded themselves as avant-garde, but their key 

works like ruhleben crematorium, the former bfa on Fehrbelliner 

platz, or their buildings for the international building exhibition ber- 

lin 1979–87 reveal a sensitive awareness of relevant architectural 

trends during the last fifty years, which have witnessed such change

Hermann Fehling and daniel gogel were com- 

missioned by the max planck association to de- 

sign three institute buildings, all of which evade 

classification. the buildings, erected between 

1965–80, represent a high point in the work of 

two unconventional architects. to mark the res- 

toration of the max planck institute for educa- 

tional research in berlin, the max planck association is showing an 

exhibition on Fehling+gogel. this is the first presentation of the of- 

fice’s full œuvre, which dates from 1946 to 1992. Fehling+gogel have 

made an idiosyncratic contribution to architecture in germany, which 

ranges from their separate beginnings to works in collaboration with 

peter pfankuch and günter Ssymmank, and to their later cooperation 

with Walter arno noebel. these multiform, polygonal structures il- 

lustrate their approach; translating functional processes into excit- 

ing, timeless spaces, and evidencing their intention to design build-

Hans Schwippert is associated with the Frg’s new 

beginnings in architecture and planning. His de- 

sign of the german “bundeshaus” in bonn 1948/49 

is irrevocably fixed in our memory; its light-flood- 

ed glass architecture, the circular layout of seats in the plenary, and its austere, modest interior 

mean that it symbolises the changed politics of a new era like no other building. 

Schwippert shaped the spirit of reconstruction in many respects: as long-term president of 

the deutscher Werkbund, as author of the exhibition concept for the german pavilion of the 

World exhibition in brussels 1958, as director of the kunstakademie in düsseldorf, and with his 

high-rise building in berlin’s Hansa district for the interbaU exhibition in 1957. 

in more than 700 pages, this publication includes a lavishly illustrated catalogue section that 

represents more than documentation of that era: it provides an introduction to all of Schwippert’s 

buildings, exhibitions and furnishing programmes. the comprehensive anthology also

in lusitania enters its final round: it has been working to create a new 

face for the region between berlin and dresden scarred by lignite 

mining for over ten years now. 

this catalogue presents thirty large- and smaller-scale projects aim- 

ing towards comprehensive structural change: from the floating div- 

ing school above a flooded mine to the “horizontal eiffel tower” near 

Finsterwalde—the former conveyor bridge F60, now reused as part

it is impossible to view urban planning in Socialism 

apart from its ideological content. Socialist ideas were 

realised in buildings, the layout of streets and squares, 

in films, in literature, and fine art. this heritage—even

last century, however, representative socialist buildings lost their political 

significance or disappeared from the urban picture altogether.

the development of the Czech city of Zlín between 

1923 and 1938 is closely connected with the name 

bat’a. Combining skilful entrepreneurship, Fordist 

serial production and social experiment, the shoe 

manufacturer thomáš bat’a and his stepbrother jan 

antonín expanded the little-known town into a laboratory 

for communal life and work. Constructed according 

to strict functionalist principles on a basic 

building grid of 6.15 x 6.15 meters, the ‘model city’ was 

studied and admired by many politicians and modern

year research project by the galerie für Zeit- 

genössische kunst (2008–10). the participating 

private collectors and businesses not only took 

on the costs of the exhibition, but also a share in the overall project 

budget for operating costs, attendants, publicity work, communication, 

etc. the artistic ideas and the objectives of the sponsors were 

presented for public discussion. 

this book analyses the contributions made by private initiatives and 

places them in a wider context of art theory dating back to the 19th 

century. reflections on the changing relations of art and commerce, 

on museum history, or shifts in the balance of public and private form 

the framework into which Cb, an often provocative project, is embedded.

Utopian models of society have not been rated so high- 

ly since the late 1970s/early 1980s. However, social pi- 

lot projects have disappeared with them, projects that 

aimed to make culture and recreation more widely available. expan- 

sively laid out parks and swimming pools were the expression of a 

desire for participation in public life and prosperity for everyone. today, 

only a few of these locations and facilities are still intact; most 

of them have fallen into decay. 

isabella Hollauf starts her work with the disappearance of past social 

utopias. Her interest is directed not only towards post-communist 

countries, but also towards those with strong socialist tendencies 

for many decades, such as austria or Sweden. in a photographic 

search for evidence, she retraces the manifest changes in values, revealing 

former utopian pretensions and the often dismal reality of 

today. the book shows projects dating from 2001 to 2007.

festo in the daily newspaper Le Figaro, paris, and thus founded the avant-garde art movement 

of Futurism. the words of the young writer triggered a revolution, for his demands met a long- 

ing for radical renewal in art. 

Futurism declared war on familiar cult objects of the past and demanded comprehensive 

changes in all the arts; painting and poetry, literature, and photography, theatre, design and 

music. new everyday aesthetics were to be created through the participation of every art 

form.
