nordic modern architecture
and postwar Germany
Caroline Spliid HøgSbro/antje WiSCHmann
(edS.)
What is “nordic modern architecture”? did german
urban planners seek inspiration in Scandinavia after
the Second World War? What influence did the Scandinavian
model of society have on architecture and
urban planning? and what differences can be discerned between the
architecture and urban planning of Scandinavia and postwar germany?
it was not only the famous Swedish “folk home” (folkhem) that contributed
to the development of a “nordic model”; the state of modernisation
in each case, different architectural preferences, and even
political considerations all played their part. Citing the example of
the “Hansaviertel” in berlin—a show of international modernist
achievement—the essays in this publication investigate the exchange
of modern architectural ideas between Scandinavia and germany
from aesthetic, socio-cultural, and programmatic standpoints.
no other type of contemporary structure is as charged with social, economic, and political sym-
bolism as the television tower. but how exactly are wishes, ideas of the future, and demon-
strations of power implemented through architecture? How is architecture transformed via
political propaganda or assimilation into everyday culture? and just how political can architecture
be? on the basis of twenty-five television towers all over the world, this book presents
fascinating portraits of an unusual type of building. Here, it is not only a matter of beating architectural
and structural records, but also of social and political contexts at the time of building,
and the towers’ situations today.
Currently, big cities all over the world are attempting to respond to
the challenges of global warming and seeking new perspectives for
improved urban life. possible strategies are often conceived by urban
planners and implemented according to a top-down scheme. but are
such “master plans” the only correct approach to the complex question
of achieving a socially and ecologically just future, and a committed
urban population that wants its local expertise to be taken
into account as well?
against the background of the complicated relations between “ur-
ban culture” and “threatened nature,” this book presents cooperative
planning processes, artistic interventions, and philosophical reflections,
thus showing possible manifestations of a sustainable urban
development that involves local citizens and protagonists.
Shanghai has grown at a breathtaking pace
since the 1990s. Housing developments are
constantly multiplying, entire districts are demolished, residents are
relocated, multilevel roads are built into the cityscape, and more and
more areas are pinpointed for renewal. but how does this dramatic
growth alter public space and people’s living environment, and what
impact does it have on the inhabitants? these questions are urgent
and relevant in megacities all over the world. in the exhibition “Shanghai
(Urban public) Space” curated by anke Haarmann in 2008, artists,
scientists, and philosophers from China and germany sought answers
to these questions; the results are presented in this publication,
including one volume of texts and one of illustrations. the juxtaposition
of theoretical reflection and practical strategies leads to
unexpected, fascinating perspectives.
M8 in China shows a surprising range of work by con-
temporary Chinese architects. this publication presents
eight private, flexibly operating offices of a completely new generation of architects, whose
works reveal some fascinating connections between tradition and the western avantgarde.
almost all the designs are characterised by great sensitivity towards regional and historical
references, while simultaneously integrating traditional techniques of craftsmanship and modern
know-how. Whether it is an artists’ residence demonstrating exciting interplay between
volume and empty space and light and shadow, or a museum with a façade made of bambooclad
concrete like a massive artificial cliff, or a teahouse at the foot of a mountain with a traditional
wooden roof and regional slate walls; all twenty-four selected projects represent impressive
evidence of the high quality of a new Chinese architectural language that has long
established its approach within the global context.
roof House, Wall-less House, and Sky House are
some names of projects designed by the young
japanese architecture studio tezuka architects in tokyo. However,
their big public buildings also reveal the extent to which the architect
couple takaharu and yui tezuka—who are enjoying increasing
international acclaim—see architecture as an elementary discipline
of defining and removing boundaries. their designs are the epitome
of simplicity: intense dialogues with clients and users help the studio
to develop solutions that appear refreshingly unconventional, but
remain firmly anchored in everyday life. often equipped with wide,
sliding-door fronts and verandas, these buildings relate to the location
and climate in a sensitive way, recalling a centuries-old japanese
architectural tradition. together with present-day innovative design
and construction technologies, they generate architecture that is
both unpretentious and timeless.
gert Wingårdh is not the protagonist of a genuinely Swedish architecture. the outgoing ar-
chitect’s role on both the national and international scenes is too cosmopolitan for that; and
the solutions he develops for a range of construction tasks are too multiform, imaginative, and
surprising. Working without the constraints of a predefined individual style or fixed theoretical
or coceptual orientation, with every new design he succeeds in finding a suitable architectural
language and fitting expression for the task in hand. in the interests of users, he places
emphasis on functional, but also on aesthetic and atmospheric qualities —while ecological
sustainability is also absolutely essential to his buildings. today he is already regarded as the
most successful Swedish architect of all time.
On the occasion of the international Arco art fair in Madrid,
2b architectes developed an exhibition pavilion for Switzerland
in the interior courtyard of the Conde Duque cultural
centre, providing space for exhibitions and other art-related
events. Two containers stacked on top of one another as
“Swiss Boxes” formed a three-dimensional white cross. The
translucency of the white outside skin, made of polycarbonate,
created a closed interior space that was illuminated by
softened daylight. At night-time, when the interior space was
lit up, the cubes looked like huge lanterns, illuminating the
whole courtyard.
Lengths of a red, UV-proof net material, which is generally
used in scaffolding structures, were hung up between the
white, crossing containers and the walls of the former barracks
building. They formed the red area of the Swiss flag,
which could only be recognised from a bird’s eye view. The
covering of red bands – in reference to the toldos that are
hung up in the streets and squares of Spain for sun protection
– created a further space that was closed to they sky in
the inner courtyard.
Zwei als „Swiss boxes“ übereinander gelagerte Container
Aufgrund der Transluzenz der weißen Außenhaut
aus Polycarbonat entstand ein geschlossener, durch
gedämpftes Tageslicht erhellter Innenraum. Nachts,
wenn das Innere beleuchtet wurde, erschienen die
Kuben wie große Laternen und illuminierten den
gesamten Innenhof.
Von den weißen, übereinander gekreuzten Containern
wurden rote Bahnen aus einem gewöhnlich im
Gerüstbau eingesetzten UV-beständigen Netzmaterial
waagrecht zu den Mauern des ehemaligen Kasernengebäudes
gespannt.
Hans Schwippert is associated with the Frg’s new
beginnings in architecture and planning. His de-
sign of the german “bundeshaus” in bonn 1948/49
is irrevocably fixed in our memory; its light-flood-
ed glass architecture, the circular layout of seats in the plenary, and its austere, modest interior
mean that it symbolises the changed politics of a new era like no other building.
Schwippert shaped the spirit of reconstruction in many respects: as long-term president of
the deutscher Werkbund, as author of the exhibition concept for the german pavilion of the
World exhibition in brussels 1958, as director of the kunstakademie in düsseldorf, and with his
high-rise building in berlin’s Hansa district for the interbaU exhibition in 1957.
in more than 700 pages, this publication includes a lavishly illustrated catalogue section that
represents more than documentation of that era: it provides an introduction to all of Schwippert’s
buildings, exhibitions and furnishing programmes. the comprehensive anthology also
discourse and controversy, positions, and projects.
before the background of changing values and quality standards, aspects and forms of na-
tional self-portrayal are particularly interesting. the authors outline experimental movements
and decision-making processes using examples of capital city planning, as well as participation
in World and building exhibitions.
23
over the past century, internationale bauausstellungen(international
building exhibitions)
have developed into an experimental field of
urban development and so into a special “trademark”
of planning culture in germany, the “iba”,
which now enjoys international recognition.
they have developed from architectural exhibitions
into exhibitions of building culture, at
which—alongside aesthetic and technological
aspects—social, economic, and ecological matters
have come to the fore, as well as quality
of processes and participation. an iba is concerned
with life, housing, and building in a city
and a region, but its aspirations to theoretical
validity, organisation and presentation go
much further. although an exceptional case, it
simultaneously sets standards for the everyday
practice of planning administrations. to this extent,
each of them already realised had a significance
continuing long after its duration and
provided vital stimuli for theory and scholarship.

in spring 2010, the internationale bauausstellung (international building exhibition) Hamburg
is organising a major interim presentation of its plans, publicising projects and making it possible
to explore construction sites for the first time.
the book presents responses to important issues of the future, which the iba Hamburg has
chosen as its key themes: Cosmopolis—the question of coexistence in our increasingly inter-
national urban societies; metrozones—access to conceivable new urban spaces; and the City
and Climate Change—the question of sustainable solutions that combine the growth of cities
and a conservational approach to our resources.
this detailed, vividly illustrated publication examines the background for each project location,
presenting the tasks faced as well as the projected solutions of the iba.
international building exhibitions are “booming” at
mand for quality in urban development and architecture.
every iba is unique and unrepeatable; it makes an
impact because it facilitates action outside of customary
routine. However, does not inflationary usage and diffuse content
cast doubt on this very quality? What makes a high quality urban
planning project into an iba and how can the format's excellence be
guaranteed in the long term?
the basis on which to secure and develop the “iba” brand has now
been laid down with the foundation of the network “iba meets
this volume documents the establishment and discussion process
based on statements by planners and architects and introduces the
core element of the network, “the Future of international building
Where else is it possible to redesign a landscape from
the very roots—beginning with the soil mix, and continuing
to entirely remodel the terrain and determine
its future usage? but what should it look like, this “new land”? How
two extreme examples, venice and las vegas, will be illustrated from
a rethink is now a necessity, and the amelioration of individual symp-
european variations on a universal theme
(18th-21st centuries)
Urban planning means far more than the design of
land, property, and housing complexes. the visions of town planners
and their clients—whether they are technical, artistic, political, or so-
cial—communicate, more or less clearly, the universal pursuit of hap-
piness. However, the planners’ notions of “happiness” and those of
future users are not always the same: often enough, the way in which
residents use their city represents a complete contrast to the planner’s
original ideas. taking twelve european examples—urban planning
projects seen from the viewpoint of planners and users—this
book sheds some surprising light on both sides of the “pursuit of
it is impossible to view urban planning in Socialism
apart from its ideological content. Socialist ideas were
realised in buildings, the layout of streets and squares,
in films, in literature, and fine art. this heritage—even
after the collapse of the political system—has survived
into the post-socialist city to date. at the end of the
last century, however, representative socialist buildings lost their political
significance or disappeared from the urban picture altogether.
other buildings from this period were given alternative functions
in the course of new urban usage concepts. even today, the appearance
of eastern european cities is dominated in many places by big
complexes of industrial buildings and prefabricated housing developments.
it has not yet proved possible to free the post-socialist city
and its symbols, functions, and metaphors from their reference to
past forms of state and the corresponding ideologies. but in its turn,
this very specific urban structure has provided important impulses
for the contemporary design of urban space.
the development of the Czech city of Zlín between
1923 and 1938 is closely connected with the name
bat’a. Combining skilful entrepreneurship, Fordist
serial production and social experiment, the shoe
manufacturer thomáš bat’a and his stepbrother jan
antonín expanded the little-known town into a laboratory
for communal life and work. Constructed according
to strict functionalist principles on a basic
building grid of 6.15 x 6.15 meters, the ‘model city’ was
studied and admired by many politicians and modern
architects. today, Zlín is a lively medium-sized
city, the location of the tomáš bat’a University—and
yet it is still possible to sense the architectural, social
and cultural heritage everywhere. an exhibition
in the architekturmuseum der tU münchen at the
Zlín is a paradigmatic example of a planned city in
which domestic living, education, and recreation were
geared towards a single goal: the economic profitability
of the bat’a shoe company. in spring 2009 a symposium
attended by internationally-renowned scholars
and local experts explored the extent to which Zlín
may be regarded as a learning model for the future of
urban planning and architecture. thought provoking,
Zlín fits neither the critical paradigms of postmodernism nor the certainties
claimed by the defenders of modernism. a comprehensive
anthology presents articles on the ‘phenomenon of Zlín’ by architects,
sociologists, and urban theorists that combines, for the first time, historical
analysis with a look at the city’s present and future development.
plans, photographs, and film stills highlight the outstanding
aesthetic quality of the model city, generating further debate and
new insights. the symposium “a Utopia of modernity : Zlín” is a project
the exhibition “Zlín – model town of modernism” will be
opened in the architekturmuseum der tU münchen in
the pinakothek der moderne this autumn. the accompa-
nying exhibition catalogue includes essays by recognised
architectural historians and describes the complex devel-
opment of Zlín and the bat’a concern from the different
perspectives of urban-planning, architecture, and social history. plans,
photographs and historical documents round up the picture of the city,
which le Corbusier described as a “shiny phenomenon”. there is a
seperate essay on le Corbusier’s concept for bat’a, which is presented
in the exhibition together with his original plans. this publication thus
offers a unique documentation of this city, which was planned accord-
ing to functionalist principles. .
exhibition and catalogue are elaborated by the architekturmuseum
der tU münchen in cooperation with the national gallery in prague,
and the regional gallery of Fine arts in Zlín. “Zlín – model town of
modernism” is part of Zipp – german-Czech Cultural projects, an in-
itiative of the german Federal Cultural Foundation.
it is rare for competition entries to be concerned
with building costs, long-term economic perspectives, or energy ef-
ficiency. but these were the exact specifications in the competition
for ideas, “planning the Future—Climate-conscious building and liv-
ing Within existing Structures.” in eight locations in germany, young
architectural offices developed concepts for various aging structures
and building ensembles, ranging from a country estate in branden-
burg to a big housing settlement in bremerhaven. this publication
offers a guideline for architects, private building clients, and munic-
ipalities now asking themselves fundamental questions: How can
we plan in a more sustainable way? and how can we use our exist-
ing resources more intelligently?
architecture between sciences and the arts
tHeoriebaU vol. 2
ÁkoS morÁvanSZky/albert kirCHengaSt (edS.)
What influence do scientific methods have on architec-
ture and art? does genuine artistic or architectural ex-
perimentation exist, and how does it differ by compar-
ison to the natural sciences? For many reasons, in the
architectural world debate on questions of scientific methodology
and research is increasing. often, the significance of the experiment
is reduced to structural-technical aspects or discussed in the context
of digital design and fabrication. only utopian architectural projects
from the 1960s or formal extravagances are recognised as “experimental
architecture.”
beginning with the concept of the “experiment,” these essays on art
and architectural theory adopt different perspectives from which to
examine a relatively new type of experience—the experimental experience
as technical activity, theoretical reflection, or calculation. examples
of current architectural practice and art production, as well
as case studies supplement the essays in this volume.
public space is currently under siege: pressure to
consume, growing surveillance, and ever increasing
motor traffic threaten to change the appearance
of our cities in a fundamental way. the two artists Folke köbberling
and martin kaltwasser have been working on their concept of artis-
tic and aesthetic opposition to these developments since 1998. they
suggest alternatives to the consumerist ideology—structural inter-
ventions, artistic statements, actions, and theories. the artists use
streets, squares, bridges, parks, and interiors as areas in which to operate.
the materials used always originate from existing “urban resources”:
throw- or giveaway objects and even garbage. each of their
works is therefore founded on communicative and social aspects. at
the same time, we are stimulated to emulate, disseminate, and multiply
their strategies, since they can be realised with the simplest of
materials.
disembodiment describes a physical process in the
context of urban conditions. it is a process that robs
our bodies of all material existence and transforms
our physical conditions by intensifying conditions
that we have been unable to feel initially up to a
point where we perceive a clearer division between the body and
thought. differing urban worlds and living environments produce a
vast range of processes of disembodiment. they produce a sense of
becoming alienated from one’s own body, from the perception of the
body, and from human behaviour. the work of architect josé Salinas
aims to investigate this intimate association between the body and
urban space. the city forms the environment, and provides the space
and energy. it consists of uninvestigated forces and synergies, which
interact by means of their wealth and complexity. the body’s covering
is also like an ambience; a topological configuration providing
space and energy. it is equally dependent on the complexity of the
surroundings.
on the orders of the emperor, the Chinese method of construction in wood was set down in
a detailed handbook (Yingzao fashi). these characteristic wooden construction methods have
been handed down from generation to generation until the present day, thanks to that handbook
and the system’s great adaptability. it is unique in architectural history for the structure
of building to enjoy such longevity.
in the 20th century, teaching models of great precision were made to document the most important
buddhist temples and palaces. all the details are reproduced exactly in the large-format
models, in order to enable study and reconstruction of the historical buildings. these models
evidence the unique beauty and technique of wooden construction methods and thus
offer fascinating insights into the tradition of Chinese architecture.
“For a fee, a leipzig gallery offers its exhibition
space to private initiatives—i.e., collectors, busi-
with it whatever they will.” roughly, this is the
scheme—no doubt abbreviated intentionally by
journalists—behind Carte blanche (Cb), a two-
year research project by the galerie für Zeit-
genössische kunst (2008–10). the participating
private collectors and businesses not only took
on the costs of the exhibition, but also a share in the overall project
budget for operating costs, attendants, publicity work, communication,
etc. the artistic ideas and the objectives of the sponsors were
presented for public discussion.
this book analyses the contributions made by private initiatives and
places them in a wider context of art theory dating back to the 19th
century. reflections on the changing relations of art and commerce,
on museum history, or shifts in the balance of public and private form
Utopian models of society have not been rated so high-
ly since the late 1970s/early 1980s. However, social pi-
lot projects have disappeared with them, projects that
aimed to make culture and recreation more widely available. expan-
sively laid out parks and swimming pools were the expression of a
desire for participation in public life and prosperity for everyone. today,
only a few of these locations and facilities are still intact; most
of them have fallen into decay.
isabella Hollauf starts her work with the disappearance of past social
utopias. Her interest is directed not only towards post-communist
countries, but also towards those with strong socialist tendencies
for many decades, such as austria or Sweden. in a photographic
search for evidence, she retraces the manifest changes in values, revealing
former utopian pretensions and the often dismal reality of
today. the book shows projects dating from 2001 to 2007.
on February 20, 1909, Filippo tommaso marinetti (1876–1944) published his Futuristic Mani-
festo in the daily newspaper Le Figaro, paris, and thus founded the avant-garde art movement
of Futurism. the words of the young writer triggered a revolution, for his demands met a long-
ing for radical renewal in art.
Futurism declared war on familiar cult objects of the past and demanded comprehensive
changes in all the arts; painting and poetry, literature, and photography, theatre, design and
music. new everyday aesthetics were to be created through the participation of every art
form.
