Then offered it her breasts, cradling it like a baby, at times gazing at it fondly,
“My prince, put aside your fear that your father will not acknowledge you,
What a pity that you have should have such an indifferent father,” she said.
an s-in-uswa-suswani COMP UV2- breast/milk-Tr1-REDUP
In terms of Uhlenbeck’s analysis this example does not follow Uhlenbeck’s pattern [pro or
NP+pro—n/an—“verbal group”]. Instead a discourse deictic (nda, “look! there!) followed by
COMP sets up a series of UV predicates with 0-anaphora to the undergoer complement, the
“pandan blossom inscribed with the name of Arjuna (Pārtha) that is the patient complement
of an AV clause in the 1st hemistich. We can thus speak of equi-NP-deletion of the subject
(undergoer) argument of a series of UV clauses in the 2nd hemistich.
The reasons for this equi-NP-deletion may have to do with raising. While there is no raisingverb
in sight in this verb, the second hemistich begins with an “expletive” (which I have
termed a “discourse deictic”) and in that sense is reminiscent of English-language
constructions based on an expletive (“there”) and a control-verb like “seems”. Comments on
the syntactic process around COMP in this construction would be most welcome.
hana n liningling EXIST COMP UV2-gaze at fondly
In this case the combination of existential hana, “there is/there are” combines with COMP to
introduce an embedded UV clause, again with 0-anaphora to (or equi-NP-deletion of) the
subject/ undergoer introduced in the 1st hemistich.
For if we examine the matter closely, it is the mad distractions of the world we should put an
end to,
Seeking the pleasures of heaven and the like will only bring pain when we achieve them,
Wearied by the five senses, pleasures will be turned round and become mere confusion,
We will be numb, not realizing that we have been blinded by the objects of the passions.
The use of waswasӗg with yan gives us a good example of an irrealis from in a conditional
clause.
