opportunities for water to alter the physical characteristics of an earthen block.
Typically, as clay absorbs water, the internal void spaces are inundated and the material
swells or expands. Subsequently, as the material releases moisture, internal void spaces
are created causing material consolidation or shrinkage. Numerous repetitions of this
process can eventually lead to cracking and fracturing of the material. In climates where
freezing temperatures are common, earthen blocks are even more susceptible to a
decrease in performance. ASTM standards C666 and D560 have been proposed to
standardize freeze/thaw durability testing procedures.
