the “state budget made no provision for schools”. 13 This explosion in the<br />

educational activity of the Greek-speakers of Macedonia is also evidence of<br />

the natural ethnic consciousness of those parents and children, since the<br />

choice of school was wholly free and as an expression of personal will thus<br />

stood as a measure of their ethnic identity. 14<br />
