In 1886 there were in Monastir “a total of 13 schools with 1646 pupils”<br />

(a gymnasium and teacher-training school with 136 students, an Orthodox<br />

Seminary with 43 students, a ‘Greek School’ with 572 students, 2 elementary<br />

schools with 100 pupils, a girls’ school with an enrolment of 300, and 3<br />

nursery schools with 354 children). 25<br />

Towards the end of the 19 th century two new primary schools (astikes<br />

scholes) were founded in Monastir, one for boys and one for girls. 26 The city<br />

also had nine nursery schools and five elementary schools (one for girls and<br />

four for boys). 27<br />

In 1900 a total of 2800 children were enrolled in the Greek schools of<br />

Monastir, whose exemplary teachers included the “invincibly Hellenist<br />

Gymnasium Headmaster Tzoumetikos, and no prefectural capital in Free<br />
