caused from language ego to actively engage <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g English and their speak<strong>in</strong>g ability could be enhanced. The<br />

blend<strong>in</strong>g of the co-discovery learn<strong>in</strong>g method and tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g companions is considered as a more effective<br />

approach <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g low-achievement learners. In other words, the tangible nature of learn<strong>in</strong>g companions br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

students the experiences of English speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the real world. The tangible companion scaffolds students to speak<br />

English and provides learners with opportunities to co-discover learn<strong>in</strong>g with each other <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

Speech recognition enhances language learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

In this study, the speech recognition technology has been <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to the learn<strong>in</strong>g devices successfully. For a long<br />

time, technology enhanced language learn<strong>in</strong>g has focused more on language read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g but few on speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

skills relatively because of the limitation of techniques (Liu et al., 2002). The technique of utterance scor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

immediately <strong>in</strong>teractive conversation with computers is a breakthrough <strong>in</strong> the field of technology-enhanced language<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g. With the aid of the speech-recognition-based learn<strong>in</strong>g companions, learners won’t feel uncomfortable to<br />

speak English <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>in</strong>structors. English teachers’ load of tak<strong>in</strong>g care of each student <strong>in</strong> the big classroom could<br />

be released. The advantage of speech recognition technology br<strong>in</strong>gs the flexible opportunities both for teachers and<br />

students, so that the language learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g will not be limited <strong>in</strong> English classroom.<br />

Conclusions<br />

This research extended the concept of learn<strong>in</strong>g companions from a virtual world to the real environment. The<br />

research teams jo<strong>in</strong>tly implemented the tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g companions for enhanc<strong>in</strong>g English conversation <strong>in</strong> the<br />

primary schools is the pioneer<strong>in</strong>g study <strong>in</strong> Taiwan to date. Results of this study <strong>in</strong>dicate that the tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

companions had positive effects on learners’ learn<strong>in</strong>g motivation, confidence and engagement. Learners viewed the<br />

English learn<strong>in</strong>g companions as <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g toys, robots, peer-partners or patient <strong>in</strong>structors for learn<strong>in</strong>g English and<br />

they felt more comfortable speak<strong>in</strong>g English with less fear on mak<strong>in</strong>g mistakes. For beg<strong>in</strong>ners, this is an excit<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

important step to take when the tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g companions play the scaffold<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g the students<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g a foreign language. It is important that the psychological learn<strong>in</strong>g barrier, caused by the language ego, could<br />

be reduced by us<strong>in</strong>g the tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g companions so that they could actively engage <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g English. Overall,<br />

the English <strong>in</strong>structor and students agreed that uses of the tangible learn<strong>in</strong>g companions effectively improve the class<br />

atmosphere, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest, and attitude of the learners <strong>in</strong> English learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
