Nevada Best of 2004 Southwest Contractor Best of 2004 Education K-12 Project (Tie) Andre Agassi College Prep Academy, Phase II Designers faced challenge on the long, linear site for this expansion to an existing school. In response to the desert environment, the buildings are oriented on an east/west axis. Deep recessed windows and entries cut glare. Student and faculty circulation were coordinated to develop the most efficient space plan as possible. The plan required that some buildings be two story in order to prove the necessary space. Phase II includes a 26,000-sq.-ft. middle school and a two-story, 27,000sq.-ft. multi purpose center. The project included new administrative offices, a cafeteria, health center and central plant. Both phases provide the latest technology in computing, fiber optics, telecommunications, distance learning and security.
The Howard E. Hollingsworth Elementary School consumes only one-third the amount of property otherwise used for school construction. Traditionally, the district has built single-level elementary schools on 12.5-acre plots. By going up, instead of out, the school can still accommodate the same number of students and faculty but on less land. Despite its compact space, the steelframed, block masonry school still manages to fit in most of the recreational amenities found at other district facilities, including four basketball and eight tetherball courts, plus one softball field and three play structures. Inside, there are 40 classrooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a library, and administration offices. The facility has everything from a high-tech computer network to the ecofriendly lighting systems to the synthetic grass inside the kindergarten classrooms. The building is slated to serve as a much-needed community center for the surrounding area.
