Because the office building will house
the state engineer's office, which oversees
the state's water supply, images of New
Mexico's history and its waterways is incorporated
into the design. Near the entrance
of the underground parking garage, crews
from HB Construction, the project general
contractor, have built a large water-harvesting
roof resembling a funnel. The roof,
which is 10-ft. wide and 3-ft. high, will gather
water, which will then be used to irrigate
the xeriscape landscaping.
The project's color palette is taken
from the surrounding earth. The cafeteria
is in a circular form referencing the
Kivas and a large open air "mall" passing
through the buiding takes it's inspiration
from traditional Spanish settlements.
The two-story lobby features a 24-ft. dia.
monumental circular stairway and the carpet
is inlaid with an abstracted map of the state's
major waterways. The project also features an
extensive amount of stonework to recall the
state's ancient material palette.
