• Demonstrate the use of commas, semicolons, colons, quotation marks,
apostrophes, and end punctuation.
• Use capitalization where appropriate in various applications.
• Apply the rules of English spelling.
IV. Sentence Structure
• Identify and correct sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences.
• Identify and use the different types of sentences in original writings.
• Demonstrate the use of sentence variety.
• Use conciseness and logic in original writings.
• Identify and use phrases and clauses.
GRADING SYSTEM AND POLICY:
Upon completion of ENG 032, each student will receive a grade of SC or U.
SC Satisfactory Completion – Student has met all course requirements, has demonstrated
required skill achievement, and has met the minimum grade required for placement in
either ENG 100 or ENG 150.
U Unsatisfactory – Student has not demonstrated progress according to course guidelines.
W Withdraw – Student has withdrawn from the course.
After three semesters/terms in Developmental English, the student must have the final
average required for placement in either ENG 100 or ENG 150.
To exit ENG 032, a student must have a final average of 70% for placement in either ENG
100 or ENG 150.
To exit ENG 032 early, a student has the following options:
Score 75% on three consecutive writing samples.
Complete assignments and request final writing samples at any time during the semester/
term.
