d) Compound – Complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and one or more

overcome with fright.
IX. Commas
a) Use a comma to separate items in a series.
Mom bought fruits, vegetables, and desserts.
b) Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to join complete
thoughts.
Mom bought the shirt, but I bought the tie.
c) Use a comma to set off introductory material.
• When I left home, it was dark.
• At noon, the church bells will ring.
• Laughing loudly, the girls ran away.
• Finally, the storm ended.
d) Use a comma for direct quotations, the exact words of a speaker.
• Macey said, “I have a new car.”
• “I have a new car,” said Macey.
