RESZ Sara Holappa was introduced to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprentice program while taking a computer class at University of Alaska Anchorage. After expressing interest in a section about waves and frequencies, her instructor suggested she apply to the electrical workers’ apprentice program, where she was accepted. 42 The Alaska CONTRACTOR Fall 2006
For the past two and a half months, Holappa’s been an apprentice with Hot Wire Electric Inc. “It is a good career, if you like to work hard and you are not afraid of a challenge,” she said. “You learn a skill and you make really good money.” The experience has led her to change her major from sociology to construction management, Holappa said. She said she was interested in the opportunity because she likes physical labor and working outside. Her advice to other apprentices: Be on time and listen. “Try to make it so they don’t have to tell you something twice,” Holappa said. Jon Lasseter, director of marketing for Hot Wire Electric, said the company is looking for workers – men or women – who can hit the street, do the job and come back. “We have women in all aspects of our operation,” Lasseter said. continued on page 44 These 12 women graduated from Alaska Works Partnership’s Women in the Trades Program. This summer, the three-week course introduced women to careers operating heavy equipment.
