<strong>UK</strong> target: 12.5% cut in greenhouse gas emissions<br />
from 1990 levels by 2012<br />
Tax per kilowatt hour (kWh) on the use of energy<br />
by businesses <strong>an</strong>d the public sector. The more<br />
energy used the more businesses are taxed.<br />
Current rates:<br />
0.441p/kWh <strong>for</strong> electricity <strong>an</strong>d 0.154p/kWh <strong>for</strong><br />
gas<br />
Renewable energy is exempt<br />
M<strong>an</strong>datory emissions trading to cut carbon<br />
emissions from large commercial <strong>an</strong>d public<br />
sector org<strong>an</strong>isations by 1.1 MtC / year by 2020.<br />
CRC will cover all org<strong>an</strong>isations whose electricity<br />
consumption is greater th<strong>an</strong> 6,000MWh/yr,<br />
equivalent to <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>nual electricity bill of ~£500k.<br />
All energy other th<strong>an</strong> tr<strong>an</strong>sport fuels will be<br />
covered, (e.g. electricity, gas, fuel <strong>an</strong>d oil).<br />
Legal framework to m<strong>an</strong>age future emissions of<br />
CO2, to reduce CO2 emissions 26-32% by 2020<br />
<strong>an</strong>d 60% by 2050 against a 1990 baseline<br />
Sets maximum CO2 emissions <strong>for</strong> whole<br />
buildings. The regulations apply to the<br />
construction of new buildings <strong>an</strong>d renovation of<br />
existing buildings<br />
M<strong>an</strong>datory requirement <strong>for</strong> <strong>UK</strong> electricity<br />
suppliers to source a growing percentage of<br />
electricity from eligible renewable generation<br />
capacity; currently 7.9% (2007-08)<br />
Forthcoming m<strong>an</strong>datory requirement <strong>for</strong> <strong>UK</strong><br />
suppliers of tr<strong>an</strong>sport fuel to ensure that a<br />
proportion of the fuel used in vehicles comes<br />
from renewable sources.<br />
M<strong>an</strong>datory requirement <strong>for</strong> the <strong>UK</strong> to reduce the<br />
amount of biodegradable municipal waste being<br />
sent to l<strong>an</strong>dfill sites:-<br />
By 2010 to 75% of that produced in 1995;<br />
By 2013 to 50% of that produced in 1995; <strong>an</strong>d,<br />
By 2020 to 35% of that produced in 1995.<br />
Tax on the disposal of waste which is paid on top<br />
of normal l<strong>an</strong>dfill fees. There are two rates:-<br />
Lower rate - £2 per tonne (increasing to £2.50<br />
from 04/08) <strong>for</strong> inactive waste such as rocks <strong>an</strong>d<br />
soil<br />
St<strong>an</strong>dard rate - £24 per tonne (increasing by £8<br />
per tonne each year from 04/08 until at least<br />
