Valérie Dayre is born in 1958. After having had various jobs, according to the consecrated
expression, she decides to write for youth. Up to this day, she has published
17 novels (Ecole des loisirs, Rageot, L’atelier du poisson soluble, Milan) for teenagers
and readers from the age of eight, as well as an illustrated tale by Wolf Erlbruch.
She is also a novel translator. She currently lives in Le Berry, in the countryside. She
never knows what should be placed in a biography…
she has win the deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis 2006.

That day, in front of the coffee shoptobacconist’s-grocer’s-bazaar-store
of the village, the inhabitants agitate
themselves around seven metallic
cages. All the village’s cats, wild and
domestic, are enclosed therein. They
await the SPA that must come fetch
them to put them down. Young Gaspard
observes the cats. There is Mouchette,
the Grey, Pompom, the Otter,
Domino, a wild cat and, finally, Virus.
Virus is known for his exploits as a big
tomcat and some of the inhabitants
look forward to seeing him caged up.
Even if he does not understand the
adults’ determination against these
poor creatures, Gaspard is nearly
happy about this catch, since the nasty
tomcat has slaughtered his cat Falbala.
In this short story where the cats seem
to be the spectators of men’s quirks,
Valérie Dayre draws the portrait of a
very colorful quarrelsome village.
