That day, in front of the coffee shoptobacconist’s-grocer’s-bazaar-store
of the village, the inhabitants agitate
themselves around seven metallic
cages. All the village’s cats, wild and
domestic, are enclosed therein. They
await the SPA that must come fetch
them to put them down. Young Gaspard
observes the cats. There is Mouchette,
the Grey, Pompom, the Otter,
Domino, a wild cat and, finally, Virus.
Virus is known for his exploits as a big
tomcat and some of the inhabitants
look forward to seeing him caged up.
Even if he does not understand the
adults’ determination against these
poor creatures, Gaspard is nearly
happy about this catch, since the nasty
tomcat has slaughtered his cat Falbala.
In this short story where the cats seem
to be the spectators of men’s quirks,
Valérie Dayre draws the portrait of a
very colorful quarrelsome village.
Blurb
The readers of Virus will rediscover Gaspard
and his grandmother, Nouchka,
whose relationship here has become
deeper and somewhat sadder too.
Nouchka has lost contact with the real
world for sometime now. Her wanderings
left her daughter no option but to
put her in an old people’s home. In order
to cling to her present, the old lady pours
her thoughts in the pages of a copybook
dedicated to her grandson.
Far from the usual clichés, this grandmother
has a strong personality and close
family ties trying to keep hold of her life
in the moment it is fading away. But how
can she stay dignified and confident
when one lives on the border between
lucidity and darkness?
The precise writing of Valérie Dayre
brings her reader through the tunnels of
a flicking memory, alternating between
the desire to rebel, to disarm or to give
up.
Blurb
On the first day of the school year, the well-ordered
existence of Denis, a schoolboy with typical teenager
interests (manly friendship, rugby and halfexpert
chat up lines), turns to hell, a hell named
Béatrice Dante. With a difficult family history, going
from foster home to foster home, Béatrice is hospitalised
suffering from shock. Devoted to the cause
of the beautiful, indifferent girl, Denis puts together
an escape plan to help her rejoin her mother Their
escapade will not end really as expected...
Firstly, Dans l’enfer de Dante astonishes and seduces
us by its style. Using colloquial expressions
worthy of Alphonse Boudard, C. Léon invents a
colourful and earthy language. With these two teenagers
from opposite worlds, he makes up a strong
story which gives rise to psychological sketches of
great fineness.
