9. FAQ<br />

Advises to design <strong>an</strong>d installati<strong>on</strong><br />

1. Wet rooms set up<br />

The combining of wet rooms (bathroom,<br />

toilet <strong>an</strong>d kitchen) <strong>with</strong>in <strong>an</strong> apartment<br />

c<strong>an</strong> not <strong>on</strong>ly save <strong>on</strong> costs <strong>with</strong> less<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>an</strong>d installati<strong>on</strong> materials –<br />

fin<strong>an</strong>cial benefits, such as higher rental<br />

income or appropriati<strong>on</strong>, c<strong>an</strong> also be<br />

generated <strong>with</strong> greater utility space.<br />

A dist<strong>an</strong>ce of 6 meters between the<br />

flat stati<strong>on</strong> <strong>an</strong>d the furthest c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

point should not be exceeded to<br />

rule out delay times when turning <strong>on</strong><br />

hot water. If more th<strong>an</strong> that, circulati<strong>on</strong><br />

pump should be added to maintain the<br />

end user comfort.<br />

2. Noise <strong>an</strong>d fire preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

The applicable noise <strong>an</strong>d fire preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

regulati<strong>on</strong>s must be c<strong>on</strong>cerned during<br />

flat stati<strong>on</strong> in wall installati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The flat stati<strong>on</strong> should be installed in order<br />

to preserve fire preventi<strong>on</strong> secti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

During design must be ensured that<br />

applicable regulati<strong>on</strong>s are complied <strong>an</strong>d<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al measures are used to ensure<br />

that neither noise nor fire preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

are impaired.<br />

3. Heat insulati<strong>on</strong><br />

C<strong>on</strong>tinuous <strong>an</strong>d high quality insulati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> hot pipelines is extremely import<strong>an</strong>t.<br />

This applies in particular to the distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

set up <strong>on</strong> <strong>system</strong>s <strong>with</strong> flat stati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

As these pipes are in operati<strong>on</strong> around<br />

the clock the entire year l<strong>on</strong>g, solid<br />

insulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>with</strong>out gaps is indispensable.<br />

Depending <strong>on</strong> the local regulati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

a minimum insulati<strong>on</strong> of 2/3 of the pipe<br />

diameter, but at least <strong>an</strong> insulati<strong>on</strong><br />

thickness of 30 mm, must be provided.<br />

Insulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the fittings at the distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

pipes is also ideal, as higher losses<br />

c<strong>an</strong> also occur because of the turbulent<br />

flows caused by the optimum heat<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>sfers. The use of factory m<strong>an</strong>ufactured<br />

insulating shells, offered by m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers, is ideal for these kinds<br />

of valves. With m<strong>an</strong>ually produced<br />

insulating shells you must ensure that,<br />

in additi<strong>on</strong> to the shell‘s insulati<strong>on</strong><br />

thickness, they also close tightly <strong>an</strong>d no<br />

c<strong>on</strong>vecti<strong>on</strong> occurs in the gaps.<br />

4. Thermosiph<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>with</strong> buffer c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />

Instead of fault pr<strong>on</strong>e n<strong>on</strong> return valves,<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s of the heat exch<strong>an</strong>ger‘s<br />

load lines <strong>an</strong>d the solar <strong>system</strong> <strong>on</strong> the<br />

buffer t<strong>an</strong>k should be provided <strong>with</strong><br />

a thermo siph<strong>on</strong>, whereby the siph<strong>on</strong><br />

height should corresp<strong>on</strong>d <strong>with</strong> 10 times<br />

the pipe diameter.<br />

5. Inflow speed <strong>with</strong> buffer t<strong>an</strong>k<br />

All supply pipes c<strong>on</strong>nected to a buffer<br />

t<strong>an</strong>k should be c<strong>on</strong>figured for a<br />

maximum inflow speed of 0.1 m/s; this<br />

prevents turbulences in the buffer t<strong>an</strong>k<br />

<strong>an</strong>d mixing of the different temperature<br />

layers.<br />

6. Temperature measurement<br />

in the buffer t<strong>an</strong>k<br />

When selecting the buffer t<strong>an</strong>k you<br />

must ensure measurement c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

(as immersi<strong>on</strong> sensors) to measure the<br />

available water temperatures.<br />

The use of a heat c<strong>on</strong>ducti<strong>on</strong> paste<br />

is recommended when installing the<br />

temperature sensor for improved heat<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ductivity.<br />

7. Radiators in general areas<br />

The complete implementati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

hydr<strong>on</strong>ic c<strong>on</strong>cept must not be forgotten<br />

when heating general areas (e.g.<br />

corridors, laundry room, drying room,<br />

hobby room, etc.). This me<strong>an</strong>s:<br />

• Use of a differential pressure c<strong>on</strong>troller<br />

in the radiator c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> pipe<br />

• Radiator valve sets presetting<br />

• Use of a return temperature limiter<br />

A flat stati<strong>on</strong> is also a good soluti<strong>on</strong> if<br />

hot water is required in a general area<br />

(e.g. laundry room).<br />

FAQ<br />

8. Rooms <strong>with</strong> more th<strong>an</strong> <strong>on</strong>e<br />

radiator<br />

With radiator <strong>system</strong>s <strong>with</strong> flat stati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

all radiators should be equipped <strong>with</strong><br />

thermostatic valves. All radiator thermostats<br />

<strong>with</strong>in a room should be set to the<br />

same value to ensure a c<strong>on</strong>st<strong>an</strong>t room<br />

temperature.<br />

Fluctuating room temperature could be<br />

prevented by using high quality radiator<br />

thermostats.<br />

Some excepti<strong>on</strong>s are radiators in reference<br />

rooms which, in combinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>with</strong><br />

a room thermostat <strong>an</strong>d a z<strong>on</strong>e valve, are<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sible for the heat supply for the<br />

entire apartment.<br />

9. C<strong>on</strong>necting pressure<br />

measurement pipes<br />

If a m<strong>an</strong>ometer or a measurement pipe<br />

is c<strong>on</strong>nected for pressure measuring,<br />

this c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> should be made, if possible,<br />

<strong>on</strong> vertical pipelines.<br />

If the pressure measurement c<strong>an</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

be made <strong>on</strong> a horiz<strong>on</strong>tal pipe because<br />

of structural c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />

must be made horiz<strong>on</strong>tally in the centre<br />

of the pipe.<br />

If these guidelines are not observed<br />

<strong>with</strong> the arr<strong>an</strong>gement of the pressure<br />

measurement pipes, trapped air<br />

(c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> above) or dirt build ups<br />

(c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> below) c<strong>an</strong> cause err<strong>on</strong>eous<br />

measurements.<br />

Commissi<strong>on</strong>ing<br />

of flat stati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

All flat stati<strong>on</strong>s must be submitted to<br />

commissi<strong>on</strong>ing after the whole <strong>system</strong><br />

is thoroughly rinsed. This should be<br />

documented as a test log (per unit).<br />

D<strong>an</strong>foss provides appropriate commissi<strong>on</strong>ing<br />

for D<strong>an</strong>foss flat stati<strong>on</strong>s.
