Pets are only allowed in available TLF “pet-friendly rooms.” If there are none available, expect either to be directed off base or to board your pet(s) until you can arrange for permanent housing. The Razorback Inn staff will assist with these and any other concerns, and provide a statement of nonavailability, should space be unavailable, to spend the night in temporary lodging off base. Once you’ve arranged for billeting, notify your sponsor and, if during duty hours, call the orderly room of your receiving unit. You will probably be invited to sign in, a formality that places you back in a duty status from a leave or travel status. If you arrive after duty hours, call the orderly room first thing in the morning of the next duty day, though signing in upon arrival is always better. In-Processing Calls to your sponsor and your new unit will help determine your immediate schedule at Little Rock AFB. Generally, you will be given several days to arrange for permanent housing, whether on base or in the local area. A later chapter details on-base housing options and opportunities for off-base housing. A mandatory event during your first days at Little Rock AFB is the one-stop in-processing at the Newcomers Joint Introduction from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every other Wednesday. To register, call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at (501) 987-6801 or stop by the center’s office in Bldg. 688. Base leaders and community representatives will welcome you to your new assignment as well as highlight local attractions. If you’re married, bring your spouse to learn about the many family programs and opportunities. 8 Arriving at Little Rock Air Force Base The Airman and Family Readiness Center offers free PCS childcare for all ranks. Visit or call DSN 731-6801 or (501) 987-6801 to make arrangements. You’ll also turn in your personnel records and file your travel voucher as part of the one-stop in-processing. Vehicle Registration Because decals are no longer required for entering Little Rock AFB, personnel do not need to register personal vehicles on base. The mandatory ID check made the decals redundant. Firearms Registration Personnel living in the dorms or billeted in the Razorback Inn must turn in firearms to the 19th Security Forces Squadron in Bldg. 480. Service members can then sign out these arms from a secure locked arms room whenever he or she wishes to use the firearm. When transporting firearms on base, all weapons must be unloaded and stored in the vehicle separately from ammunition. Personnel living in family housing or off base are not required to register their personal firearms on Little Rock AFB. LITTLE ROCK 2013 AFB GUIDE
Consolidated Support Facility Location: Bldg. 1255 Offices in this building handle personnel, finance and household goods shipments. You can also pick up ID cards (you will need a letter from your first sergeant to replace a lost card), arrange to have your household goods delivered — or shipped — and check personnel records. Sign in and ask for directions at the information desk just inside the front door. Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closed Saturday, Sunday and down-days Phone System The 911 emergency system is used at Little Rock AFB and in the surrounding area just as it is within the rest of the United States and Canada. Dialing 911 from an onbase or off-base phone connects to an operator who can immediately arrange for police, fire or medical service to respond appropriately to an emergency. Dialing a call from office to office on base or making a call to base housing requires dialing seven digits. To call off base from an official phone, first dial 99, then the seven-digit number for numbers within the 501 area code. Calls to other area codes require a PIN and can be obtained from your unit telephone control officer. From base housing, dial the seven-digit number for calls within the 501 area code, or 1, area code and number for calls outside the 501 area code. DSN service is available from official phones on base. To call, first dial 94, then the seven-digit number. The C-130A on static display at the main gate is one of the more famous of the Herks used by the Air Force for the past half century. This aircraft was actually the last one out of Saigon in the spring of 1975 when the armies of North Vietnam overran South Vietnam. Flown by a Vietnamese flight crew, this aircraft set a record which will likely never be challenged. When it landed in Thailand several hours later, after getting lost and wandering out over the South China Sea, more than 450 people came down the ramp. Some 32 of these people actually rode in the cockpit. The story is that in Saigon, as the plane prepared to take off, hundreds and hundreds of refugees made their way to the airport to try and get aboard any plane going anywhere. These refugees surged up the ramp as the C-130 prepared for take-off. The plane prepared to taxi, but it was so crowded that the crew chief could not raise the ramp. Informed of this problem, the pilot began taxiing and then slammed on the brakes, which caused everybody in the aircraft to jolt forward. This created just enough space to raise the ramp. The ramp was quickly hoisted into position and every inch of runway was used to stagger into the air with a grossly overloaded aircraft.
