destination in due course, but remained only a short<br />

time ; for, on December nth of the following year, he<br />

appeared in Batavia without proper credentials, having<br />

been suspended <strong>from</strong> office in presence of his ministerial<br />

colleagues by Governor van der Burg.<br />

In January 1640, a letter was received at Batavia<br />

containing the sad news that Mr. Leeuwius had recently<br />

died, and that Mr. Schotanus still required to be kept<br />

under Church censure ; while on July I2th, the Rev.<br />

Joannes Bavius was called to <strong>Formosa</strong>, Mr. Junius<br />

having been granted leave of absence after ten years of<br />

faithful service.<br />

On May Qth, 1641, the energetic Mr. Junius reached<br />

Batavia, and was asked if he were willing to return to<br />

<strong>Formosa</strong> at the close of a brief stay, or inclined rather to<br />

continue his journey to the Fatherland. He replied<br />

that, if considered necessary, he was willing to go back<br />

and resume his missionary work, on condition that he<br />

received an increase of salary, and that Governor<br />

Traudenius was instructed to cease <strong>from</strong> molesting him<br />

in the discharge of his official duties. Assurance having<br />

been given that orders would be sent to have everything<br />

conducted as under the former Governor, he further<br />

petitioned that the Rev. C. Agricola be made a Licentiate,<br />

and the Rev. N. Mirkinius be permitted to draw full<br />

stipend on his attaining a preaching knowledge of the<br />

language. As no Kirk-session had yet been established<br />

in <strong>Formosa</strong>, the opportunity was taken to ask Mr. Junius<br />

if he thought it desirable to form one ;<br />

his reply being in<br />

the affirmative, and conveying a request that this point<br />

also should be brought under the notice of the Governor.<br />

Thus, on May I3th, Mr. Junius engaged to return for<br />

three years to <strong>Formosa</strong>, receiving as salary one hundred<br />

and forty guilders a month, in addition to an allowance<br />

of ten ryxdaalders for house expenses ; His Excellency
