Mildura Rural Council: Good <strong>Sport</strong>s are Ageless<br />
What was the aim of the program?<br />
◗ To offer the older adult community a<br />
variety of recreational activities, including<br />
sport, in which they might not have<br />
participated in previously.<br />
◗ To develop relationships between the local<br />
sport clubs and associations and older<br />
adults which make up a substantial<br />
proportion of the community.<br />
How was the opportunity created?<br />
◗ A network forum was organised by the<br />
Council to bring together venue operators,<br />
sport clubs and associations, community<br />
groups and other government service<br />
providers associated with managing the<br />
client group.<br />
What were the benefits of the program?<br />
◗ Significant benefits for individuals were<br />
created including improved physiological<br />
and psychological well being and<br />
5.5 <strong>Sport</strong> and Recreation Victoria,<br />
Department of State<br />
Development<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> and Recreation Victoria (SRV) exists in<br />
part to stimulate the growth of all facets of<br />
the sport industry and to encourage<br />
participation in physical activity, including<br />
<strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>. SRV works with sport<br />
organisations to develop sport opportunities,<br />
and funds participation programs in the sports<br />
industry.<br />
In the area of <strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>, SRV performs<br />
the following tasks:<br />
◗ Securing <strong>Masters</strong> events for the State of<br />
Victoria,<br />
◗ Initiating projects that assist in the<br />
development of <strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong><br />
particpation opportunities,<br />
improved social networks within the older<br />
adult community.<br />
◗ <strong>Sport</strong>ing venues and clubs had the<br />
opportunity to market their services to a<br />
new group with the possibility of<br />
improving membership or use of facilities.<br />
What were the keys to making it work?<br />
◗ Receiving a grant from VicHealth to assist<br />
with administration, venue and<br />
promotional costs.<br />
◗ Conducting research on the needs of<br />
potential clients.<br />
◗ Involving a range of groups and individuals<br />
from all parts of the community – venue<br />
providers, club administrators, community<br />
group leaders and government agencies.<br />

<strong>Victorian</strong> <strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> Strategy,<br />

◗ Funding sport organisations to conduct<br />
programs targeting masters aged people,<br />
◗ Identifying current opportunities and<br />
providers of <strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>, and<br />
◗ Distributing resource kits and informing<br />
sport organisations about <strong>Masters</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> in<br />
Victoria.<br />

Foundation (VicHealth)<br />
VicHealth exists to promote health in the<br />
Victoria community. VicHealth works with<br />
sport organisations to promote this health<br />
