3-1. Introduction Model 8024 operation is divided into two general categories: basic bench operation, and GPIB operation. Basic bench operation, which is covered in this section, explains how to use the model 8024 for generating the required waveform characteristics. GPIB programming can also be used to greatly enhance the capability of the instrument in applications such as automatic test Figure 3-1. Model 8024 - Front Panel Layout. equipment. This aspect of operation is covered in Section 4. 3-2. Front Panel Familiarization 3 Operating Instructions The front panel is generally divided into four sections: buttons, connectors, display and indicators. The following paragraphs describe the purpose of each of these items in details. Refer to the Model 8024 front panel layout throughout the following descriptions. 3-1
Operating Instructions 3-3. Buttons All front panel buttons except the POWER switch and the dial are momentary contact switches. Most buttons include an associated annunciator light for indication of the selected parameter and/or operating mode. Some buttons do not have an associated annunciator light. Exercising these buttons generates an immediate response on the display. Front panel buttons may be divided into five functional groups: Instrument state, Parameters, Cursor control, Output control, and Memory control. These controls are described in the following paragraphs. 3-3-1. Instrument State Buttons Five buttons in this group control the state of the Model 8024. They are marked: Power, System, DCL, Reset, and Trigger. POWER - The POWER switch controls the AC power to the instrument. Pressing and releasing the switch once turns the power on. Pressing and releasing the switch a second time turns the power off. SYSTEM - The SYSTEM button when pressed modifies the LCD display to read the current GPIB address setting. Press any other button to resume normal operating conditions. LOCAL/DCL - The LOCAL/DCL button when pressed, and the instrument is in remote mode (but not in remote lockout condition - LLO), will cause the instrument to go to local operating mode. When the generator is already in local operating mode, this button may be used to clear the instrument to its factory default settings. The function of DCL (Device Clear) is described later in this Section. RESET - The RESET button modifies individual parameter setting to its factory default. This button effects the displayed parameter only. TRIGGER - The TRIGGER button may be used as a manual trigger stimuli, when the instrument is operating in one of its external trigger modes. 3-3-2. Parameter Buttons There are four buttons in this group. They are marked PARAMETERS, WAVEFORMS, FILTER, and MODE. These buttons control which parameter will be displayed on the LCD display. The function of each button is described in the following. 3-2 PARAMETER - The PARAMETER button when pressed toggles between the FREQ and AMPL menus. Selection and modification of various parameters is discussed later in this section. WAVEFORM - The WAVEFORM button controls which of three types of waveforms will be placed at the output connector. There are three types of waveforms that the Model 8024 can output: standard waveforms, arbitrary waveforms, and sequenced waveforms. The various waveform options are described later in this manual. FILTER - The FILTER button selects between filter options that may be applied to the output signal. The generator offers three low-pass filters: 20 MHz Gaussian, 25 MHz Elliptical, and 50 MHz Elliptical. Each filter has a different frequency response and is used in different application. The filters and their operation is described later in this manual. MODE - The MODE button when pressed modifies the instrument’s operating mode to one of four options. It also modifies the LCD reading to display trigger parameters. The various operating modes are described later in this manual. 3-3-3. Cursor Control Buttons There are six buttons and a dial in the cursor control group. These buttons control the cursor position within the menus. These buttons are described in the following. CURSOR/MENU CONTROL - There are four buttons that control the position of the cursor within each menu. These buttons are marked with arrows; pointing to four different direction. The buttons which are marked with the up and down arrows are used for scrolling through the various parameters within a specific menu. The buttons which are marked with the left and right arrows are used for placing the cursor on the data or digit which has to be modified. DIAL - The Dial is a mechanical rotary-encoder that simulates a digital potentiometer. It is used for editing the displayed parameter. The dial may rotate clockwise to increment reading or counterclockwise to decrement reading. ENTER - This button is used for executing a specific function which requires complete operators’ attention. It is normally used in conjunction with front panel settings of arbitrary parameters which, once modified, change front panel settings permanently.
