UNIT 4: THE TECHNICAL WRITING PROCESS
Technical Writing Process
Technical writing is a process and this unit will walk you through the steps of:
1. Prewriting
2. Drafting
3. Revising
4. Editing and proofreading
5. Publishing
We’ll examine each stage from prewriting to Publishing.
Prewriting
Prewriting is the step we often wish we had taken anytime we have sent off a
message and regretted it later or wished we had worded it differently.
Prewriting is the planning before putting into words.
Prewriting - Organization of the message
When prewriting, plan how you want to sequence your information:
Based on events in a timeline?
How items relate to one another or by location?
• Similarities and/or differences?
• In order of importance?
• Cause and effect?
Considering these questions prior to writing helps formulate our design thoughts.
