UNIT 4: THE TECHNICAL WRITING PROCESS Outlining Once you have identified how to organize your message the next step of prewriting is to outline your thoughts. Often writers will mistakenly skip this step. Formulating a framework for your document now will provide a structure to build upon later. An outline serves as a great reference for when the writing starts! Principles of Outlining 4 steps to outlining: 1. Numbering systems 2. Organizing Data 3. Drafting the outline 4.
