Outlining<br />
Once you have identified how to organize your message the next step of prewriting is to<br />
outline your thoughts.<br />
Often writers will mistakenly skip this step. Formulating a framework for your document<br />
now will provide a structure to build upon later.<br />
An outline serves as a great reference for when the writing starts!<br />
Principles of Outlining<br />
4 steps to outlining:<br />
1. Numbering systems<br />
2. Organizing Data<br />
3. Drafting the outline<br />
4. Finalizing the outline<br />
Numbering systems<br />
Two primary number systems used in outlining:<br />
Alphanumeric system - consisting of both letters and numbers<br />
Decimal System – numbers only with subcategories expressed in decimals<br />
