Perinatal deaths in term SGA infants were less common than in preterm SGA infants but were several fold higher compared with rates in AGA infants. These term SGA infants were twice as likely to be admitted to the neonatal unit compared with their AGA counterparts. The LGA babies did not appear to have elevated risk of admission or prolonged neonatal unit stay compared with AGA babies. Summary / Implications These <strong>2010</strong> data again confirm that babies who are SGA by customised centiles have higher rates of morbidity and mortality than their AGA counterparts. This applies both to babies born at term and preterm. Women who smoke clearly have higher rates of SGA than non smokers. Local data have now established that women who become smoke free by 15 weeks (and preferably stop smoking by the end of the first trimester) have rates of SGA comparable to non smokers. Cessation early in pregnancy with appropriate support should be the goal for all pregnant smokers. 51
