Overview - Info Desktop The Info Desktop serves as an information hub. From that hub you can create, schedule, organize, and analyze both reports and queries. You can also schedule Windows and DOS programs, as well as batch files. The Info Desktop is comprised of: The Folder Tree and Job Information list box for organizing objects into a familiar, easy-to-understand system of folders similar to File Manager, Windows Explorer, or e-mail. The Folder Tree and Job Information list box also allow you to view reports, open thirdparty applications, and run batch files. For more information, see Folder Tree, Page 11, andJobInformation list box, Page 12. Seagate Crystal Reports, the leading application for accessing data and designing reports. The Info SQL Designer for creating Structured Query Language (SQL) queries which can be used when designing reports. For more information on the Info Report Designer and Info SQL Designer, see the Seagate Crystal Reports User’s Guide,theSeagate Crystal Reports online Help (CRW.CHM), and Info SQL Designer online Help (SQL.HLP). The Info Cube Designer for accessing OLAP data and creating OLAP reports. For more information on the Info Cube Designer, see the Cube Design Guide. The Info Worksheet, which allows you to view, as well as “slice and dice” data from an OLAP cube. For more information on the Info Worksheet, see the Viewing Info Objects in the Worksheet, Page 89. Info Viewers for ActiveX, Java, and HTML, designed for viewing data via Page-On-Demand Technology and the Info Analyzer, designed for viewing and analyzing existing data. NOTE: Depending on your rights, some of these components may not be available. Contact your Administrator for information on the components available to you. Once created, objects can be easily organized in the Info Desktop using a system of folders. Within each folder, the program provides information about scheduled requests including current status. Public folders are displayed if you have the right to see them. For more customized organization, the Info Desktop gives you the ability to create private folders. You are the only one who can view items placed in a private folder(s). 2 Seagate Info Desktop User’s Guide
Most importantly, the Info Desktop allows you to send requests to the Info Automated Process Scheduler (Info APS). The Info APS is the background scheduling engine that usually resides on a network server. Your request tells the Info APS to schedule an object on one of the Info Servers, a “workhorse” machine designated to do the actual processing. You can specify which Info Server is to process an object, or leave those decisions up to the Info APS. Possible Info APS requests are: process a report, process a query, process a cube, execute an application, or execute a batch file. All you need to do is specify when the final data is needed. For example, you may need a report for a meeting that begins at 9:00 a.m. the next morning. You can request that the report be processed and printed at 6:00 a.m. (allowing time for the report to be processed and time for review before the meeting), and the Info APS takes care of sending the object to be processed at the specified time. NOTE: Info Desktop information can also be accessed through a web browser by using the WebAccess desktop. For more information, see Overview - WebAccess Desktops, Page 266. The Info Desktop puts a remarkable amount of design, analysis, and scheduling power into your hands in a convenient, easy-to-use interface. Key Features of Seagate Info 7.5 Open OLAP Seagate Info isn’t limited to viewing and manipulating Seagate Info and Holos OLAP cubes - the latest version of Seagate Info introduces the concept of Open OLAP. Open OLAP now makes it possible for you to view, analyze and report on cubes generated by other OLAP systems. Seagate Info accesses these other data providers via Open OLAP Gateways.
