win in Baton Rouge
By Jim King
Consider the following…
Mark Williams averaged 238 in
the qualifying to lead the field.
In the first seven games of
the finals, he averaged 238 as
well…yet he now trailed Rick
Minier by 163 pins.
Rick averaged 260 for the
finals and won his first seven
matches. Nobody else could
figure out the carry as well as
Rick and Mark.
SASBA title!
By Jim King
T. J. Johnson grabbed the
lead after two games of the
finals and bowled steady the
next five games to lead Pete
Thomas by 65 pins entering the
T. J. settled the issue early
his way to shooting 248 and
nailing down the title.
Joe Lecroy started the
tournament with 170- 160
and whacked ‘em the rest of
the way to grab 2nd.
Dennis Francis bowled on
A squad Sunday morning and
shot 300 the last game to go
ENGLAND’S BARRETT RAL-
LIES FROM INJURY, WINS
FIRST PBA TITLE IN RENO
It was supposed to be a
party, a traditional part of the
Kingdom International bowling
event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,
but the party in the darkness
of a March night almost turned
into a disaster when a group
of bowlers drove high-powered
all-terrain vehicles and dune
buggies out onto the sand
dunes.
There was a multi-vehicle
crash. Three of the bowlers
sustained serious injuries, including
England’s Dom Barrett,
who was driven back to the
campsite with a blood-spattered
forehead, swollen face and a
fractured collarbone. Barrett
and the other injured bowlers
have now fully recovered,
which the English star proved
Sunday in Reno, Nev., where he
won the PBA West/Northwest
Region Sands Regency Casino
Open at the National Bowling
Stadium for his first PBA title.
Barrett, who currently ranks
fifth on the European Bowling
Tour points list, posted
an 8-2 match play record and
compiled 4,126 pins, including
match play bonus pins, to
