Glossary<br />
advance base—(DOD) A base located in or near an operational area whose primary mission<br />
is to support military operations.<br />
amphibious force—(DOD) An amphibious task force and a landing force together with other<br />
forces that are trained, organized, and equipped for amphibious operations. Also called AF.<br />
amphibious task force—(DOD) A Navy task organization formed to conduct amphibious<br />
operations. The amphibious task force, together with the landing force and other forces,<br />
constitutes the amphibious force. Also called ATF.<br />
assault echelon—(DOD) In amphibious operations, the element of a force comprised of<br />
tailored units and aircraft assigned to conduct the initial assault on the operational area.<br />
Also called AE.<br />
assault follow-on echelon—(DOD) In amphibious operations, that echelon of the assault<br />
troops, vehicles, aircraft, equipment, and supplies that, though not needed to initiate the<br />
assault, is required to support and sustain the assault. In order to accomplish its purpose, it<br />
is normally required in the objective area no later than five days after commencement of the<br />
assault landing. Also called AFOE.<br />
civil affairs—(DOD) Designated Active and Reserve component forces and units organized,<br />
trained, and equipped specifically to conduct civil affairs activities and to support civilmilitary<br />
operations. Also called CA.<br />
cooperative security locations—(DOD) A facility located outside the United States and<br />
U.S. territories with little or no permanent U.S. presence, maintained with periodic Service,<br />
contractor, or host-nation support. Cooperative security locations provide contingency<br />
access, logistic support, and rotational use by operating forces and are a focal point for<br />
security cooperation activities. Also call CSL.<br />
counterinsurgency—(DOD) Those military, paramilitary, political, economic, psychological,<br />
and civic actions taken by a government to defeat insurgency. Also called COIN.<br />
cyberspace—(DOD) A global domain within the information environment consisting of the<br />
interdependent network of information technology infrastructures, including the Internet,<br />
telecommunications networks, computer systems, and imbedded processors and controllers.<br />

pending.)<br />
defense support of civil authorities—(DOD) Civil support provided under the auspices of<br />
the National Response Plan. Also called DSCA.<br />
developmental assistance—(DOD) U.S. Agency for International Development function<br />
chartered under chapter one of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, primarily designed to<br />
promote economic growth and the equitable distribution of its benefits.<br />
DOTMLPF—(DOD) Doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education,<br />
personnel, and facilities.
