Live volt age is still pres ent even with the front panel con trol switch OFF. Wait at least three full min utes af ter power has been re moved be fore re mov ing any cov ers or ac cess pan els to al - low ad e quate time for in ter nal ca - pac i tors to dis charge. Connecting Welding Machine to Line Voltage The in put power should be con nected to the unit through a fused dis con nect switch, or other suit - able dis con nect ing means fur nished by the user. Re move left side panel to gain ac cess to the in - put ter mi nal block and ground screw. 2. Con nect the three phase power line to the ter - mi nal block as shown in Fig ure 4-5. 3. Con nect the power sys tem safety ground to the the screw la beled PE GROUND lo cated on the base of the ma chine near the in put ter mi nal block as shown in Fig ure 4-6. 4. Re place side panel. WARNING: Never con nect the safety ground screw to one of the three line phases. This would rep re sent a se ri ous elec - tri cal shock haz ard. The wir ing to this ma chine should be per - formed by a qual i fied per son only. POWER-MASTER 500 430581-004 Grounding The frame of this weld ing ma chine should be grounded for per son nel safety, and to as sure op - er a tion of the overcurrent pro tec tion. The ground ing method, and the equip ment ground ing con duc tor size and type shall con form to lo cal and na tional codes. For the Na tional Elec tri cal Code, the equip ment ground ing con duc tor shall be green, green with a yel low stripe, or bare. If flex i ble power ca ble is used, use a ca ble as - sem bly which in cludes the equip ment ground ing con duc tor. If me tal lic ar mored ca ble or con duit is used, the metal sheath ing or con duit must be ef - fec tively grounded per lo cal and na tional codes. Rub ber-tire mounted equip ment shall be grounded to con form to lo cal and na tional codes. The ground ing as sists in pro vid ing pro tec tion Fig ure 4-6 against line volt age elec tri cal shock and static shock. The ground ing serves to dis charge the static elec tric charge which tends to build up on rub ber-tire mounted equip ment. This static charge can cause pain ful shock and lead to the er ro ne ous con clu sion that an elec tri cal fault ex - ists in the equip ment. If a sys tem ground is not avail able, con sult the elec tri cal code en force ment body for in struc - tions. The weld ing ma chine should be con nected to an ad e quate driven ground rod, or to a wa ter pipe that en ters the ground not more than 10 feet (3 me ters) from the ma chine. The equip ment ground ing con duc tor size is listed in Ta ble 4-1 as a guide if no lo cal or na - tional code is ap pli ca ble.
