Grounding<br />

The frame of this weld ing ma chine should be<br />

grounded for per son nel safety, and to as sure op -<br />

er a tion of the overcurrent pro tec tion. The<br />

ground ing method, and the equip ment ground ing<br />

con duc tor size and type shall con form to lo cal<br />

and na tional codes.<br />

For the Na tional Elec tri cal Code, the equip ment<br />

ground ing con duc tor shall be green, green with a<br />

yel low stripe, or bare.<br />

If flex i ble power ca ble is used, use a ca ble as -<br />

sem bly which in cludes the equip ment ground ing<br />

con duc tor. If me tal lic ar mored ca ble or con duit is<br />

used, the metal sheath ing or con duit must be ef -<br />

fec tively grounded per lo cal and na tional codes.<br />

Rub ber-tire mounted equip ment shall be<br />

grounded to con form to lo cal and na tional codes.<br />

The ground ing as sists in pro vid ing pro tec tion<br />

against line volt age elec tri cal shock and static<br />

shock. The ground ing serves to dis charge the<br />

static elec tric charge which tends to build up on<br />

rub ber-tire mounted equip ment. This static<br />

charge can cause pain ful shock and lead to the<br />

er ro ne ous con clu sion that an elec tri cal fault ex -<br />

ists in the equip ment.<br />

If a sys tem ground is not avail able, con sult the<br />

elec tri cal code en force ment body for in struc -<br />

tions. The weld ing ma chine should be con nected<br />

to an ad e quate driven ground rod, or to a wa ter<br />

pipe that en ters the ground not more than 10 feet<br />

(3 me ters) from the ma chine.<br />

The equip ment ground ing con duc tor size is<br />

listed in Ta ble 4-1 as a guide if no lo cal or na -<br />

tional code is ap pli ca ble.<br />
