1.0 <strong>LAKE</strong> IDENTIFICATION<br />
Lewis Smith Lake is located in northwest Alabama in Cullman, Walker and Winston counties.<br />
The lake is an Alabama Power Company Reservoir constructed for power generation. The dam is<br />
located on the Sipsey Fork of the Mulberry Fork ofthe Black Warrior River approximately 19.3 km<br />
northeast of Jasper, Alabama. Operation began in 1961 and since that time the reservoir has been<br />
utilized for power development, flood control and recreational purposes. Nearest municipalities include<br />
Jasper and Cullman, Alabama. The Water Works and Sewer Board of the city ofBirmingham, only 40<br />
km to the SE, has a raw water intake located approximately one quarter mile (km) downstream ofSmith<br />
Dam. This source is used for industrial and public water supply.<br />
Morphometric characteristics ofLewis Smith Lake appear in Table I-I. Hydroelectric dam and<br />
turbine specifications appear in Table 1-2. The lake is composed ofthe mainstem and numerous<br />
tributary streams. Normal pool is maintained at 155.5 m ms!. Drawdown begins I July and is usually<br />
completed by I December. Drawdown results in a winter pool elevation of 151.2 m msl, an annual<br />
fluctuation of4.3 m. Average depth at full pool is 19.9 m and during drawdown 20.1 m. Reservoir<br />
volume is 171,470.4 ha-m at full pool and 138,619.6 ha-m at drawdown.<br />
