CULTURAL STUDIES (GB) Vorlesungen --- --- Freed History of Literary and Cultural Theory, 2/2,5 CP 2 st. mi 14-16 HGB 20 (vgl. Vorl.-Nr. 050 635) In one sense, everyone knows what literature is and how to read it. But then again, what is “literature”? How exactly does it differ from other kinds of writing in ways that makes it “literature”? And why do we read “literature” differently than, say, an instruction manual or telephone book? How and why have the academic practices of reading changed through time? To ask and explore these and related questions is to engage in the theory of literature. This series of lectures will introduce students to significant contributions to and developments in the theory of literature since the time English Literature became an academic discipline. The course is organized around the institutional history of literature studies in Britain and the US. Included are examinations of hermeneutics, Arnoldean humanism, New Critical formalism, phenomenology and reader response criticism, structuralism, New Historicism and Cultural Materialism, versions of feminism, and poststructuralism and deconstruction. 050 658 Pankratz Postmodern British Literature and Culture, 2 CP/2,5 CP 2 st. di 16-18 HGB 20 Postmodernism is an umbrella term for cultural trends from the 1940s until nowadays summed up by the slogan "anything goes". This covers new approaches in architecture, the arts and literature – a trend towards parody, pastiche and deconstruction. It also denotes new ways of thinking about society and culture developed by theorists such as Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard, Homi Bhabha or Jean-Francois Lyotard, who emphasised the breaking up of binaries and states of oscillation between self and other, local and glo<strong>ba</strong>l, reality and representation. This
new relativity also informed the various new subcultures, the different styles of consumerism and pop culture. The aim of the lecture course is to give a survey of British post-war culture and its different stages of post-modernisms – from the beginnings of the affluent society up to New Labour's "Cool Britannia". By means of the framework of postmodernism it will try to analyse diverse cultural phenomena such as Magic Realism and metahistoric novels, Beatlemania, James Bond or the Royal Family. Requirement for credit points: regular attendance, contributions on Blackboard and written test at the end of the semester. Seminare 050 660 Berg Society, Culture, and Politics in Ireland, 4 CP 2 st. fr 10-12 GABF 04/614 Süd Specialists in Irish Studies argue that there are not only two Irelands in a geographical and political sense, the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, but also several Irelands which succeeded each other in history. There was Ireland, the first British colony, exploited and oppressed by England/Britain. There was postcolonial Ireland, still relying on the UK economically and to a certain extent politically, and all the more eager to prove its difference in terms of identity, culture, and religion. In the 1980s and 1990s, a new Ireland came into being, suddenly rich, increasingly secular, and considered to be one of the ‘most glo<strong>ba</strong>lised’ countries in the world. Today, also the Celtic Tiger phenomenon (as the rapid period of growth and change has been called) is a thing of the past. Instead, traditional patterns of poverty and emigration seem to reappear. In this course, we will discuss how these transformations came about, how much of the older Irelands can still be found in the newer ones, and how changes in the cultural, political, social, and economic spheres interacted in the different phases of modern and contemporary Irish history. A reader with key texts will be provided. Requirement for credit points: active participation, organising and chairing part of a course session, research paper (Hausarbeit). To be able to attend, students need to have passed the “Introduction to Cultural Studies”.
