Fragmented Selves, Bodies and Narratives: An Introduction to Postmodern American Literature and Culture, 4 CP ___________________________________________________________________ 2 st. do 12-14 GABF 04/255 What is postmodernism? What is postmodernity? How are identities, bodies and narratives constructed that we consider as postmodern? These are some of the questions which will be discussed in this seminar. In the first part of this course we will study a number of theoretical but also fictional texts to explore the main concepts associated with postmodernism and postmodernity (e.g. “grand narratives”, “sliding signifier”, “simulacrum”, “pastiche”, “cyborg”, etc.). In the second part we will use this <strong>ba</strong>ckground knowledge to analyze a variety of cultural texts from contemporary American culture, including novels (e.g. Chuck Palahniuk’s Invisible Monsters), films (e.g. Blade Runner, Fight Club or Romeo & Julia), and television series (e.g. postmodern elements in The Simpsons or True Blood). Throughout the seminar, we will particularly focus on the specific construction of narratives, bodies and identities in the context of both postmodernism as an artistic movement and postmodernity as a wider cultural and historical condition. Students are expected to be motivated to read complex theoretical and fictional texts, watch a number of films and TV series, and conduct their own research in small groups. Requirements: regular attendance, active participation, short written assignments, group project, final paper. Required texts: the theoretical texts will be made available in a Reader or on Blackboard. Students will be expected to purchase the novels that will be assigned in the first session. Students need to have passed the “Introduction to Cultural Studies” before enrolling for this course.
