Intermediate load power plants run considerably more hours than peak<strong>in</strong>g units, but<br />

fewer hours than base-load power plants.<br />

Different types of electricity-generat<strong>in</strong>g plants are differently suited to operation as<br />

base-load plants or peak<strong>in</strong>g units. Figure 10 shows the typical generation mix of a<br />

hydro-dom<strong>in</strong>ated system without nuclear power. In general, nuclear run-off-river and<br />

conventional thermal power plants are cover<strong>in</strong>g the base load demand. Utilities like<br />

gas-fired power plants and hydro storage power plants cover the peak load demand.<br />

Pump storage facilities are the only renewable energy source which can support the<br />

system by highly flexible power generation ancillary services (Tab. 3) and peak load<br />

generation. As shown <strong>in</strong> Fig. 10 pump storage power facilities are enabled to replace<br />

renewable or thermal power plants from base load to peak load generation.<br />
