System description
Context The World-wide Information System for Renewable Energy (WIRE) was installed by the
International Solar Energy Society (ISES) in 1995. The system is sponsored by the German
Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. It’s aim is formulated as follows: ‘to create,
through the application of information technology, and through the use of the international
infrastructure, partner organisations and vast network of expertise of ISES, an information
source of great qualitative value, accessible to all persons and organisations pursuing the
advancement of renewable energy worldwide’. ISES is a UN-accredited NGO, present
in more than 50 countries, with the aim to supports its members in the advancement of
renewable energy technology, implementation and education.
Description of the
information system
The WIRE information system is set up in a number of separate modules (including the
following: buildings, conferences, market place, components, research, statistics, white
papers, news, literature, images, educational, organisations and discussions) that can each
be searched in a number of ways, depending on the module in question. In most modules,
at least the following search categories are available: by date, author, title, category,
technology, type and by keyword. The information system contains a large number of
entries in each of the modules, the search engine of the systems allows for a specifi c search
in a selection of modules and categories (including geographical scope) which allows for
targeted search possibilities.
