Economy, Employment and Industry
Labor Force
In 2000, Jefferson County had a labor force of 104,725 people and an unemployment rate
of 3.2 percent, slightly better than the Missouri unemployment rate of 3.4 percent. In
1990 the unemployment rate was 7.7 percent. This includes an increase of 12,860
employees since 1990. As of 2000, most employed county residents worked in retail,
service, and government sectors. According to the 2000 Census, 112 persons were in the
Armed Forces, 104,613 individuals were in the civilian labor force, 99,837 individuals were
employed, and 4,776 were unemployed. See Table J6 below. A total of 44,488 individuals
were not included in the labor force.
