9.9 Institutions - Research, development, education related to aquaculture<br />

The Swedish government has in a recent review on aquaculture in Sweden (Det Växande<br />

Vattenbrukslandet) indivated that the two universities UGOT and SLU have the major<br />

responsibility <strong>for</strong> research, development and education within the field <strong>of</strong> aquaculture. UGOT and<br />

SLU have an active, ongoing dialogue to this effect.<br />

At UGOT, there is broad expertise in aquaculture-related <strong>fish</strong> physiology including larval<br />

development, growth, smoltification, metamorphosis, puberty and sexual maturation, especially<br />

linked to the endocrine control <strong>of</strong> these live processes. Further, there is expertise in gastrointestinal<br />

physiology, including mechanisms <strong>of</strong> nutritional uptake and effects <strong>of</strong> alternative <strong>feed</strong> sources. This<br />

includes stress effects alternative <strong>feed</strong>s on gastrointestinal immunology and disease resistance.<br />

There is also expertise on mussel and oyster farming. The below contacts represent the board <strong>of</strong><br />

Aquaculture Center West, based at UGOT.<br />
