EN American photographer Francesca Woodman had everything in her to become a
great artist: natural talent, charisma, drive and ambition. Today her nude photos in
black and white are considered milestones. Sadly, she was never able to enjoy the recognition:
to everyone’s shock Francesca took her own life on January 19th, 1981. The
Woodmans, filmed in respectful black and white, tells the story of this tragedy. At the
same time, it is a touching portrait of the family Francesca left behind.
NL De Amerikaanse fotografe Francesca Woodman had alles in zich om een groot artiest
te worden: een aangeboren talent, charisma, sterke drive en ambitie. Haar zwartwit
naaktfoto’s worden vandaag de dag beschouwd als mijlpalen. Die erkenning heeft
ze echter zelf niet meegemaakt: tot algemene consternatie pleegde Francesca op 19
januari 1981 zelfmoord. The Woodmans, gefilmd in stijlvol zwart­wit, vertelt het verhaal
van deze tragedie, maar is tegelijk ook een ontroerend portret van de familie die ze
achterlaat.
