EN Anyone who has flicked on the tv and ended up on a music channel knows them:
the music videos in which dangerously curvy women drape themselves around machos.
You ain’t seen nothing yet. Those videos are bland versions of the real deal. Man Ooman
paints a shocking picture of the extremely sexually agressive, slightly absurd dancehall
style from Jamaica, and of the subculture in which it is embedded. Jamaica combines a
high murder rate with great poverty, an immense amount of churches and a very vibrant
music culture. The way men and women perceive and interact with each other is – from
a western perspective – unfathomable.
NL Wie al eens langs een muziekzender zapt, kent ze wel: de videoclips waar dames met
stevige rondingen wulps aanschurken tegen machomannen. You ain’t seen nothing yet.
De clips zijn een flauw afkooksel van het echte werk. Man Ooman schetst een onthutsend
beeld van de uiterst seksueel aggressieve, lichtjes absurde Jamaïcaanse dancehalldansstijl
en bij uitbreiding de subcultuur die ermee samen hangt. In het land met het
hoogste aantal moorden en grote armoede, maar ook met het grootst aantal kerken en
een levendige muziekcultuur, zijn de verhoudingen tussen mannen en vrouwen – vanuit
westers perspectief – nauwe lijks te vatten.
