4.2.1. Geography<br />

<strong>Kosovo</strong> consists of <strong>the</strong> relatively small total land area of 10,908 square kilometres located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Balkan pen<strong>in</strong>sula. <strong>Kosovo</strong> is landlocked and surrounded by mounta<strong>in</strong>s on all sides except on <strong>the</strong> eastern<br />

part. In central <strong>Kosovo</strong> <strong>the</strong> terra<strong>in</strong> is much lower and flat (pla<strong>in</strong>s). <strong>Kosovo</strong> shares a total of 700.7 km of<br />

borders <strong>with</strong> its neighbour<strong>in</strong>g countries: Albania (111.8 km), Macedonia (158 km), Montenegro (78.6 km)<br />

and Serbia (351.6 km) (SOK, 2008). Of <strong>Kosovo</strong>'s total area 42% is urban and 58% is rural (SOK, 2008).<br />

4.2.2. Population<br />

<strong>Kosovo</strong>'s total population is 2.2 million people which amounts to a population density of 197 p/km2 mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Kosovo</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> most densely populated areas of <strong>the</strong> Balkans (SOK, 2009). Of <strong>the</strong>se 2.2 million people <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Kosovo</strong> 90% are Albanian and 5% Serbian. O<strong>the</strong>r ethnic groups <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong> are Muslim Slavs such as<br />

Bosniaks and Gorans (2%), Roma (2%) and Turks (1%) (ECIKS, 2009). <strong>Kosovo</strong> has a very large Diaspora<br />

<strong>with</strong> over 500.000 Kosovars liv<strong>in</strong>g abroad 11 , <strong>the</strong> local population <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong> depends on <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

remittances as <strong>the</strong>se form 45 percent of <strong>Kosovo</strong>’s annual domestic revenues 12<br />
