What does <strong>the</strong> content of this chapter fur<strong>the</strong>rmore mean for <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic trade <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mitrovica</strong>? First, it shows<br />

that <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mitrovica</strong> <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic relations are still very tense and <strong>the</strong>re is a lack of trust towards <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ethnic<br />

group. No one really wants to have contact <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r group if not for a specific reason. This is why trade<br />

is one of <strong>the</strong> few activities <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic contact: <strong>the</strong>re is a specific reason and this reason is:<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g money. Although <strong>the</strong> rules of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic game are applied less strongly on traders because<br />

everyone understands that <strong>the</strong>y have to make a liv<strong>in</strong>g, it is still difficult to trade out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open. Especially<br />

Serbian traders can except extra difficulties from <strong>the</strong>ir politicians and o<strong>the</strong>r people <strong>in</strong> power because <strong>the</strong>se<br />

are generally radicals and oppose ethnic-<strong>in</strong>tegration. An example was given about one person who has <strong>the</strong><br />

power to decide if <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic market is open or not on Saturdays. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong>se people <strong>in</strong><br />

power often are <strong>in</strong> illegal trade <strong>with</strong> “<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r” <strong>the</strong>mselves, assured of a rich profit as long as <strong>the</strong>y can keep<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r people from cooperat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ethnic group. The <strong>in</strong>ter-ethnic traders who are <strong>the</strong> subject of<br />

this study clearly face a lot of difficulties but regardless of this <strong>the</strong>y are trad<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y are hav<strong>in</strong>g contact<br />

where reconciliation programmes failed to motivate people for this, and <strong>the</strong>y are cooperat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Now what could this trade mean for relations between Albanians and Serbs <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mitrovica</strong>, accord<strong>in</strong>g to those<br />

traders, o<strong>the</strong>r locals and members of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational community?<br />
