31 sierpnia 1939 roku sfingowano
napad na ówczesną radiostację
gliwicką (przy dzisiejszej ul. Tarnogórskiej).
Miał to być pretekst
do napaści wojsk niemieckich
na Polskę. W latach wojny miasto
było całkowicie nastawione na produkcję
zbrojeniową. W Gliwicach
powstały cztery obozy pracy (filie
obozu w Oświęcimiu), które były
źródłem taniej siły roboczej. W 1945
roku miasto zajęła Armia Czerwona,
która dokonała znaczących zniszczeń
– spalony został zabytkowy
budynek Teatru Victoria, nie
oszczędzono również hotelu „Haus
Oberschlesien”. W 1945 roku
Gliwice ponownie znalazły się
w granicach Polski.

] Ruiny Teatru Miejskiego
To ruiny olbrzymiego kompleksu kulturalno-rekreacyjnego
wybudowanego
ok. 1890 r., na terenie którego znajdował
się Teatr Miejski„Victoria”. Był to największy
i najbardziej reprezentacyjny
obiekt tego typu na Górnym Śląsku.
W 1945 r. został spalony przez żołnierzy
radzieckich. Obecnie, utrzymywany jako
stała ruina, jest jednym z najciekawszych
obiektów kulturalnych w regionie
i służy prezentowaniu niestandardowych
przedsięwzięć artystycznych.
] Ruins of the Municipal Theatre
The ruins of the huge cultural and recreational
complex erected around the
year 1890, holding the Municipal ”Victoria”
Theatre; the grandest and the most
representative building of that type in
Upper Silesia. Burnt down in 1945 by the
Soviet soldiers. Presently maintained as
a permanent ruin, one of the most interesting
cultural facilities in the region,
aims at presenting the unconventional
artistic undertakings.
] Ruinen des Stadttheaters
Ruinen eines um 1890 erbauten, gewaltigen
Kultur- und Erholungskomplexes,
dessen zentralen Punkt das Stadttheater
Victoria bildete. Das Theater, welches
zugleich das größte und repräsentativste
Objekt dieser Art in Oberschlesien war,
wurde 1945 von sowjetischen Soldaten
niedergebrannt. Heutzutage dient es in
Form einer „permanenten Ruine“ kulturellen
Zwecken und gilt u.a. durch seine
kühnen Kulturprojekte als eine der interessantesten
Bühnen der Region.
