On 31 August 1939 there was
a simulated attack upon the radio
station (present Tarnogórska
Street). The event was supposed to
give the German army a pretext for
invading Poland. During the war
period the city was entirely concentrated
on military production. In
Gliwice there were four labour
camps, branches of the Oświęcim
concentration camp, which were
the source of cheap labour force. In
1945 the city was occupied by the
Red Army, which caused significant
destruction – the historic building
of the Victoria Theatre was burnt
down, even the Oberschlesien hotel
was not spared. In 1945 Gliwice
was back within the Polish
boundaries.

] Kościół pw. Wszystkich
Świętych
Najstarsza świątynia w mieście, wybudowana
w XV w. w stylu gotyckim. Ma
piękny barokowy wystrój i gwiaździste
sklepienia. Kościół ma konstrukcję halową,
tzn. posiada trzy nawy równej wysokości.
W podziemiach kryją się
gotyckie wątki murów oraz ostrołukowe
portale, co wskazuje na średniowieczny
rodowód tego obiektu. Istnieje możliwość
wejścia na wieżę kościelną i podziwiania
panoramy miasta.
] All Saints Church
The oldest temple in the city, erected in
the 15 th century in Gothic style. It has
beautiful baroque interiors and stellar
vaults. The church has a hall structure, i.e.
it has three equal height vaults. In the
vaults there are remains of Gothic walls
and ogival portals, indicative of the medieval
origins of the building. It is possible
to climb the church belfry and
admire the city panorama.
] Allerheiligenkirche
Das älteste Gotteshaus der Stadt entstand
im 15. Jahrhundert im gotischen
Stil. Neben der schönen barocken Ausstattung
sind auch die Sterngewölbe erwähnenswert.
Die im unterirdischen Teil
vorhandenen Fragmente von gotischen
Mauern und die spitzbogigen Portale
weisen auf den mittelalterlichen
Ursprung der Kirche hin. Zugänglich für
Besucher ist der Kirchenturm mit schönem
Stadtpanorama.
