BRIEF ABOUT CIRT
Genesis
CIRT was established in 1967 on the joint initiative of the then Ministry of Shipping & Transport, Government of
India & the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings. The raison d'etre of CIRT is its commitment to
improve the efficiency & productivity of the transport sector, with particular emphasis to STUs.
The institute is located on the Pune-Nashik Highway, at Nashik-Phata, Bhosari on the outskirts of Pune City, i.e.,
within the adjoining Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits.
Pune city is well connected by domestic airlines, few international airlines & rail services. The institute is at a
distance of 13 kms from Pune railway station & 18 kms from Pune Airport.
Objectives
With the economic liberalisation, CIRT is expanding its activities to include both the public & the private sectors in
passenger & goods transport. The main objectives are :-
(a) Promote & provide for the study of the principles & practices of organization & management in various
spheres of public transport;
(b) Conduct research on critical issues in transport development & to undertake consultancy assignments to
improve organizational effectiveness & operational efficacy;
(c) Impart training & education to all categories of managers & professionals engaged in furthering the cause
of public transport;
(d) Extend cooperation to the government & its agencies in evolving integrated policies & legislative
framework to enable a balanced growth of the transport sector;
(e) To be the clearing house of ideas, information & data pertaining to transport industry with specific
reference to safety, environment & productivity;
(f) Lay down standards, specifications & norms for various materials used in heavy vehicles through
performance evaluation, material analysis & quality monitoring;
(g) Undertake research for improvement & technological up gradation of vehicles used for passenger
transportation together with their components & assemblies;
(h) Engage in relevant activity as may be conducive or incidental to the attainment of the above objectives.
Activities

CIRT is a premier institute in the field of engineering research, testing of auto component; research,
consultancy & management development in transport & planning etc.
With more than four decades of experience it has emerged as a single window for the public transport
industry & also as a 'Centre of Excellence' in Automotive Engineering & Road Transport Management.
