BRIEF ABOUT CIRT<br />
Genesis<br />
CIRT was established in 1967 on the joint initiative <strong>of</strong> the then Ministry <strong>of</strong> Shipping & <strong>Transport</strong>, Government <strong>of</strong><br />
India & the Association <strong>of</strong> State <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> Undertakings. The raison d'etre <strong>of</strong> CIRT is its commitment to<br />
improve the efficiency & productivity <strong>of</strong> the transport sector, with particular emphasis to STUs.<br />
The institute is located on the Pune-Nashik Highway, at Nashik-Phata, Bhosari on the outskirts <strong>of</strong> Pune City, i.e.,<br />
within the adjoining Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits.<br />
Pune city is well connected by domestic airlines, few international airlines & rail services. The institute is at a<br />
distance <strong>of</strong> 13 kms from Pune railway station & 18 kms from Pune Airport.<br />
Objectives<br />
With the economic liberalisation, CIRT is expanding its activities to include both the public & the private sectors in<br />
passenger & goods transport. The main objectives are :-<br />
(a) Promote & provide for the study <strong>of</strong> the principles & practices <strong>of</strong> organization & management in various<br />
spheres <strong>of</strong> public transport;<br />
(b) Conduct research on critical issues in transport development & to undertake consultancy assignments to<br />
improve organizational effectiveness & operational efficacy;<br />
(c) Impart training & education to all categories <strong>of</strong> managers & pr<strong>of</strong>essionals engaged in furthering the cause<br />
<strong>of</strong> public transport;<br />
(d) Extend cooperation to the government & its agencies in evolving integrated policies & legislative<br />
framework to enable a balanced growth <strong>of</strong> the transport sector;<br />
(e) To be the clearing house <strong>of</strong> ideas, information & data pertaining to transport industry with specific<br />
reference to safety, environment & productivity;<br />
(f) Lay down standards, specifications & norms for various materials used in heavy vehicles through<br />
performance evaluation, material analysis & quality monitoring;<br />
(g) Undertake research for improvement & technological up gradation <strong>of</strong> vehicles used for passenger<br />
transportation together with their components & assemblies;<br />
(h) Engage in relevant activity as may be conducive or incidental to the attainment <strong>of</strong> the above objectives.<br />

CIRT is a premier institute in the field <strong>of</strong> engineering research, testing <strong>of</strong> auto component; research,<br />
consultancy & management development in transport & planning etc.<br />
With more than four decades <strong>of</strong> experience it has emerged as a single window for the public transport<br />
industry & also as a 'Centre <strong>of</strong> Excellence' in Automotive Engineering & <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Transport</strong> Management.
