MAYOR’S MESSAGE
‘Consolidating our Future’ is a
good theme for this year’s
annual report. At the beginning
of the year we were still in
drought but with the end in
sight, looking forward to things
getting better. However the
power of nature went from the
positive to the point of disaster
with a record flood upon us.
The January flood left us with a huge
challenge. Our community met that
challenge equally if not better than
any before it, dealing well with the
September and November events.
When January came the Gannawarra
community had an extraordinary
battle on its hands. Community
fortitude and spirit was the key to our
ability to get through this record flood
event – not only a record in the flood
heights but in the duration of the
event.
Council and the Councillors took a
lead role in communicating with
communities and working in
conjunction with the lead agencies to
be able to marshal resources to meet
challenges as they arose. All should
be commended in the highest degree.
As a result of being diligent and
resourceful Council has been able to
secure funding to repair damaged
assets and achieve cooperation from
the State and Federal Governments in
the flood relief and recovery process.
Through excellent planning by our
staff and strong support from our
Councillors this process is well
underway. We are already starting to
deliver fully reconstructed roads and
facilities.
