Hughes named campaign
director for Democrats
The appointment of William
J. Hughes, local attorney, as
general campaign manager in
Cape May County for
freehplder and "legislative
candidates of the Democratic
Party,, was announced this
week by- Jerome J. Diehl,county
Democratic Committee
chairman.
Hughes, the county's former
first assistant prosecutor, was
narrowly defeated when he was
a candidate for Congress a year
ago. Diehl commented that
Hughes' political. experience,
plus widespread i personal
popularity in all parts of the
area, will be a valuable asset to
the Democratic candidates this
year.
Expressing pleasure at being
able to take an active role in
support of the Democratic
ticket, the former prosecutor
promised that they will wage
"a dean,.hard hitting, issueoriented
campaign that- will
show them to be candidates
worthy of the public's support."
. Hughes announced that the
Democrats plan to appear on as
many non-partisan platforms
as possible between now and
the November election to afford
voters a good opportunity to
appraise them in person.
He said his team has already
contacted the Jaycees and the
League of Women Voters and
also will ask other
organizations to sponsor public
forums at which voters can
make their own judgment as to
who will best serve their interests.
"At a time when real estate
and othep. taxes threaten to
strangle us, when some of our
communities are facing almost
insurmountable financial
problems, and when our county
is floundering in a slough of
indecision and intra-party
feuding, the only hope the
people have this year is to do a
thorough house cleaning at the
-polls," Hughes, said in a
statement.
"It isn't enough today for a
candidate to run under a party
label and expect people'to vote
for him out of habit. Candidates
must give strong evidence that
they are worthy of public
support, and that is why we
intend to give the voters as
many chances as possible to.
"see, hear and judge our men
and what they stand for. The
party machinery serves mainly
as the means of giving them
exposure to the electorate:
"Unfortunately, a great
many voters don't know any of
the candidates, but they reach
for the same old party lever in
the voting machine just
because they always have. Yet
these same people will comment
that politicians are all
alike, or they will be heard to
complain of high taxes,
government waste and
mismanagement that their own
habit has been perpetuating.
"Too many people don't take
the time to investigate the
candidates they are asked to
vote for, but they wouldn't
dream of making personal
financial decisions with so little
thought or preparation. Very
often that hasty decision at the
polls can be more costly than
would a hurried decision in
their own personal affairs.
"Our own county is ample
proof that it can be expensive to
assume that all wisdom is.
inherent in one party. History
has shown time and again that
one-party domination of
government for a long time is.
not in the best interests of the
taxpayers." i

to. Citizenship Institute.

Mrs. Donald Schlots has been
appointed chairman of the
Community Improvement
Project and will discuss this
project which is sponsored by
the New Jersey State
•Federation of Women's Clubs.
