PRETTY AS A PICTURE—That aptly describes
young Karen Turner of Absecon who was among the
Elected school board
is topic of Council
Further. plans to continue
efforts to have an elected school
board issue placed on an upcoming
election ballot were
discussed at a meeting of the
board of directors of the Allied
Civic Council held last week.
Council chairman John W.
Gilbert Sr. informed those
present that the City Commissioners
and the Ocean City
Board of Education have advised
that they cannot grant the
Council's request to enact a
resolution permitting the
question to be submitted to the
voters on November 2.
The question would read:
"Shall .the provisions of
Revised Statutes of New Jersey
18A.-9-4, permitting
reclassification from a Type I
school district with an appointed
school board to a Type
II school district' with an
elected school board be adopted
in the City of Ocean City?"
The City Commissioners
stated that they believe the
initiative for such a change
should come from the people.
The New Jersey Statutes
provide that the reclassification
of school
districts can be submitted'to
the voters by one of three
methods: The first two involve
the passing of a resolution by
the municipal governing body
or local school board. The
alternative is filing with the
city clerk petitions signed by
not less than 15 percent of the
legally qualified voters who
voted at the preceding general
election..
The council directors agree it
would be practically impossible
to obtain the required number
of signatures in the time
remaining. Therefore it was
voted to defer until early 1972
the circulation of petitions
which will permit the public
referendum.
It was pointed out by the
council directors that the desire
for a change from appointed to
elected board is due to the fact
that the electorate wants the
opportunity to vote on the
annual school budeet and
