Dear Friends and Fellow Walkers
Every time I sit down to write an introduction to
our new brochure, I look forward to the coming
season with the same enthusiasm and anticipation
as I did almost thirty years ago. I sense the spirit of
our Walks – that something new and exciting is just
around the corner waiting to be discovered and shared
every day on the trail.
In 2012, I fulfilled a life-long ambition to follow in the
wayfaring footsteps of Bruce Chatwin and visit
Patagonia. My wife, Betsy, and I soaked up the
compelling silence of the steppes, the grandeur of the
glaciers, the ever-changing vistas of snow-capped
mountains and lakes and the magical emptiness of this
awe-inspiring landscape. Together we have created a
uniquely Wayfarer take on walking in southern
Patagonia (p.58) which features hikes with incredible
views of some of the most stunning scenery in the
world, chances to see interesting wildlife such as
guanacos, rheas, condors and flamingoes, a cruise to
almost touching distance of the great Perito Moreno
Glacier and interaction with gauchos who still work on
the land.
Medieval towns and walled cities, the majesty of Mont
St Michel, renowned local culinary specialties and a day
exploring the beaches and museums of the D-Day Landings,
make this a fascinating new Walk. It’s a Founders’ Walk, too,
so I’m looking forward to it hugely!
For Chris Hague, my co-Founder, and me, one of the joys of
the Founders’ Walks is that we get to choose the destination
- we are thrilled to introduce and accompany our new Walk
in the Czech Republic and Germany, linking Prague and
Dresden (p. 51). Apart from these two wonderful cities of
art and culture, we walk through dramatic unspoilt scenery,
villages scarcely touched by the twentieth century, a
story-book journey of wars and revenge and reconciliation,
a magical world of rivers and forests.
Many of our guests now join us for two or more
consecutive Walks and this new Walk has been scheduled to
connect with our journey from Vienna to Prague enabling a
two-week immersion in Central European culture.
I hope you will join us somewhere on our journey of
renewal in 2013,
When Philippa, our local guide, proposed our 'Downton
Abbey' Walk (p.7), I was sure that Highclere Castle, the
model for the fictional abbey, would be the highlight of
the Walk. But it turns out to be only one of several
memorable highlights – two of England’s prettiest
villages, stone circles more impressive than Stonehenge,
the stunning Winchester Cathedral – and some lovely
walking in gentle countryside.
Michael West
Founder
PS. We are bringing back a couple of old favorites in 2013;
we will be returning to the footpaths of Slovenia (p.45)
and, in Italy, to the glorious Amalfi Coast (p.33).
After receiving a number of requests for Walks in
Brittany and Normandy (p.23)– our French Team has
refined an itinerary that covers the best of both.

What are the accommodations like?
We know only too well the importance of comfort
after a day of fresh air and exercise. We know also
how much a characterful and historic lodging can
add to the overall experience and understanding
of a destination. Accommodations include
dazzling châteaux, ancient castles, elegant villas,
stately manor houses, country house hotels, even
a luxurious barge in France.
What type of food should we expect?
Meals are equally select and distinctive, featuring
local delicacies prepared the traditional way by
chefs who love their culinary heritage. Sampling
regional wines and beers is a highlight and they
are included with the evening meal.
Walk the Talk
How does The Wayfarers help look
after the places and people we visit?
Walking with The Wayfarers brings direct benefit to
the people who welcome us so warmly to their
region. As a small, independent company ourselves,
we avoid the hotel chains in favor of locally-owned
inns. We eat in restaurants serving food grown by
local farmers. We use local transportation and local
amenities. We believe spending time with those
who care for their heritage offers a greater insight
into local cultures. At the end of a trip we come
away with genuine understanding of the people
and appreciation for the places we visit.
The Wayfarers trips directly support a wide range
of local, national and international charities and
conservation initiatives. For example, more than
18 different National Trust areas or properties
feature in our itineraries and nearly 20 Wayfarers
Walks in nine countries, seven of them in Europe
and others in New Zealand and the United States,
feature World Heritage Sites.
The Wayfarers is proud to be a
ill & Morag are a fabulous team -
‘Blots of repartee between the two,
and they complement each other. Both
are very much in tune with their clients’
needs. There was not one unhappy soul
in our group. Morag knows the history
and culture and explains it beautifully.
Bill is also very keen on the history as
well, in addition to being able to tell you
almost anything you would wish to
know about the flora & fauna of the
countryside.’
his, my first visit to the U.K., was
‘Teverything I could have hoped
for, and more. The Lake District in the
west was wild, mountainous and
scenic, contrasting with the hills, dales
and moors of Yorkshire on the east
side. Our lodging ranged from
charming country inns to spacious
manor houses, and the food was fresh,
tasty and prepared with obvious pride
in its locally-grown origins...We met
many friendly and interesting people,
and enjoyed the beer. This hike is a
wonderful introduction to the
northern English country.‘
What was your favorite aspect of the Walk?
‘A-Z it was perfect!!! I really cannot choose one -
Even walking in downpours could not dilute the
experience or dampen my appreciation for the
beautiful areas we walked through.’
Julie Hulten, England - Hadrian’s Wall & The
Amazing!’
Pat Baker, Scotland ~ Culloden to Edinburgh
‘That we moved on to a new place every day - saw
a lot of different terrain.’
Pamela Green, England ~ Coast to Coast
‘The camaraderie, of course, and the scenery, so
incredible, day after day. A great mix of villages and
pure countryside, riverside, forest and open fells.’
Jean Follett, England ~ Yorkshire Dales
‘The vistas and the great people you meet
during the walk. It’s always a wonderful
experience!’
Jonathan Stroud, England ~ Hadrian’s Wall
& The Lake District
‘I enjoyed the background history and
meeting Daniel, Peter and Patrick - those little
“side attractions” made the walk more
interesting.’
Marilynn Vandor, Ireland ~ Ring of Kerry
‘Always it is the walking itself - even in the
rain - the pace, the greenery, the quiet - such
a welcome change from our hectic modern
lives. Next I would say the people - our Walk
Leaders, Managers and other members of the
group - staying in unique places we wouldn’t
have found on our own with people we greatly
enjoy. After a day of walking through natural
beauty. Does it get any better?! On this
particular Walk I loved exploring the Atholl
Estate - so vast and varied. Bill has an eye for
beauty and plans his walks to take full advantage
of many stunning spots.’
Elissa Becker
can’t say enough about how I
‘I enjoyed the Croatia Walk. Ante
Lenka and Mato were amazing. With
them and our other walkers from the
U.S. we were one happy family. It was a
joy to be with everyone each day.
I was widowed at 62. My husband and I
loved to travel, and I have been
struggling to re-invent myself as a
single person (not easy). I think I’ve
found my travel niche in Wayfarers. I
felt very comfortable being a single
person. Even though the other four
walkers were couples, I did not feel like
a fifth wheel.’
Jennifer Wells,
Croatia - The Dalmatian Coast
Our Walk Leader & Walk Manager were....
‘Wonderful - nice, nice people, took great care
of us - felt safe & like they could handle any
emergency. Great reps for Wayfarers & their
countries.’
‘Ante really knew the history and we learned a
lot about the country and its history as we
walked. The boat trips and the dinners were all
memorable and added to the adventures of the
entire week’s walk.’
Joe Chiczewski & Barbara McNamara,
Croatia - The Dalmatian Coast
‘Marvelous views, countryside and Bavarian
way of life. Diverse aspects of the region and
history.’
Hugh & Barbara Trollope,
Germany - Bavaria
‘I love walking with the people who walk with
The Wayfarers.’
Nina & Dick Dixon, Germany - Bavaria
‘I loved everything about Croatia. I especially
liked having meals at private homes. It was very
special to have lunch on someone’s patio. I loved
the feeling that we were one family.’
Jennifer Wells,
Croatia - The Dalmatian Coast
‘Loved them both - Jana very, very
informative, Lenka cheerful, helpful.
Both a lot of fun.’
Kathryn Haze,
Czech Republic - Vienna to Prague
‘Both Jane and Ernst were wonderful;
answering any questions or helping with a
problem. They are great fun.’
Jerry & Karol Sibley, Germany - Bavaria
What was your favorite aspect of the Walk?
‘All of it but especially the walk through the
forest on the way to Unterammergau, the tour at
the Passion Play theater and the organ concert at
the small church on the women’s island in
Chiemsee.’
Jerry & Karol Sibley, Germany - Bavaria
‘The Walk exceeded all my expectation. I
enjoyed the whole experience - seeing places off
the beaten track, combining exercise with visiting
a new country.’
Our Walk Leader & Walk Manager were....
“Julie and Robyn could not have been more
delightful. They orchestrated the trip brilliantly -
a perfect mix of hiking and cultural / natural
activities - and their personal concern that each of
us had good experiences was evident and
touching. They both clearly love Alaska and were
proud to show its many facets to us. I especially
liked the hands-on nature of many of our
cultural/natural activities: panning for gold,
talking to the old guy in Hope, riding behind the
sled dogs - and of course socializing the puppies!
All produced indelible impressions and memories.”
Barbara Robson, USA - Alaska
‘Superior! Shared love of country and in-depth
complement each other beautifully, aware,
Nancy Pogue, USA - New Mexico ~ The Land
'Mo was a fine leader, well organized, articulate,
well versed on all the different sites we visited.
Tom is a thoughtful caring guide who knew all
about the trees, flora and fauna of the region,
who also serves the area as a firefighter. He
is an excellent photographer.'
‘John Knox seemed to know everyone on
the South Island, and he went out of his
way to introduce me to local scientists.
Sandy was very knowledgeable about New
Zealand flora and fauna. Both had a great
sense of humor.’
George & Camille McGregor, New
'John Knox is an intelligent, caring and kind
individual with a great sense of humor and a
depth of knowledge about New Zealand
culture, geography, flora and fauna. He is one
of the best guides we have ever had on any
guided trip. He has organized this trip with
great care to show the diversity of New
Zealand's landscape and I appreciated his
leadership of the group. I loved this trip.
I had heard of the "legend" of John Knox
and it is all true.'
Barbara Hauser, New Zealand - Spectacular
'John was exceptional - totally committed to
providing the "perfect walking experience". He
is full of great information, is easy-going and
calm and very good-natured. He is an excellent
driver, always keeping safety first. I really
enjoyed my interactions with John. '
minimises time spent in a bus. However, we
encourage you to explore more of the
region while you are here with our specially
